The Best Mochi Waffles
Mochi waffles are so unique and delicious. And if you've never tried one before, you're in for a treat!
Most of the time, you can only get a chewy mochi waffle at a specialized cafe, but this recipe lets you make it at home in about 15 minutes!
And the result is one of the tastiest breakfasts you'll make from scratch.
These mochi waffles are super crisp on the outside and they have a great chew to the inside of them that goes so well with the silky smooth dulce de leche topping. Throw on some fresh fruit, and you have a breakfast made in heaven!
And if you want another sweet treat for breakfast to go with these mochi waffles, try whipping up these Churro Pancakes or Air Fryer Cinnamon Rolls! Both of those breakfast recipes are crowd-pleasers every time I make 'em.
Ingredients
One of the best things about this homemade mochi waffles recipe is that you don't need too many ingredients to make them. In fact, all you'll need is about a handful of them.
Here's everything you need:
- ¾ cups non-fat milk (or plant milk)
- 1 egg
- 1 ¼ cup mochiko flour (sweet rice flour)
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
And for the optional toppings:
- Dulce de Leche (or almond/cashew cream)
- Strawberries
The most important part of this recipe is the mochiko or sweet rice flour. It should be available at your local grocery store, but if you can't find it, you can get it online here. And I definitely suggest using the flour because it's what makes the texture of these waffles so delicious.
Plus, if you're in the mood for more of the chewy, delicious texture of mochiko, you can put it to good use by making these mochi donuts and mochi muffins next!
How to Make Mochi Waffles
This waffle batter recipe is the same as any homemade waffle. The only difference is the type of flour we're using, that's what gives these chewy mochi waffles such an incredible texture.
And the steps are super minimal, so you can get these out and on your plate in about 15 minutes! Oh, and you will need a waffle iron, so make sure you get that out.
Now, let's not waste any more time, let's get into the recipe.
Step 1: Making the Batter
As I mentioned, making this mochi waffle batter couldn't be any easier. All you have to do is add the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and milk to a bowl and whisk until everything combines and a batter forms.
And be very careful not to over mix the batter - you'll just want to mix until everything combines.
Then set the bowl of batter aside while the waffle iron heats up.
Step 2: Cooking The Waffles
Now take out the waffle iron, grease it with some cooking spray, and let it get very hot. Most waffle makers have a light that will indicate when it's hot enough.
So once the waffle iron is hot, pour enough mochi waffle batter into the iron to cover the surface. Then close the lid and let it cook for about 5-10 minutes or until golden brown and slightly crispy.
Next, repeat the process with the remaining batter and make sure to spray some cooking spray on the iron in between each waffle.
Step 3: Serving
The best way to serve these mochi waffles is with some indulgent toppings.
And my favorite topping is drizzling each one with a generous serving of dulce de leche and adding some fresh strawberries.
Of course, you can keep it classic and top them with some butter and syrup.
With that said, really any way you eat these waffles, they'll be delicious.
