    The Best Hibachi Fried Rice

If you've ever been to a hibachi restaurant, then you know the fried rice is where it's at. There's something special about hibachi-style fried rice. And, well, even though this recipe doesn't come with a show, we can still recreate those awesome flavors at home.

What's even better? You can recreate all of that fried rice deliciousness with just a few pantry staples - and leftovers! Seriously, some seasonings, eggs, and leftover rice are all you need to put this dish together.

Plus, making it is a breeze too. Everything cooks in just one pan - in under 20 minutes - and 3 steps are all you need to follow to make. it.

    Sounds pretty awesome, right?!

Now, this hibachi fried rice recipe is over-the-top delicious on its own, but it's even better paired next to some "mains". Whip it up alongside this  Panda Express honey sesame chicken or this general tso shrimp, and you'll be eating good tonight.

I mean, you can have a Japanese takeout meal cooked fresh and on the table in less time than getting to-go!

    Ingredients

As I mentioned above, the ingredient list for this fried rice is pretty simple. Odds are you have just about everything in your kitchen waiting for you!

Now, here's what you'll need to make this hibachi style fried rice:

    • 1 tbsp. Sesame Oil
    • 2 Eggs, lightly beaten
    • 1 tbsp. Butter
    • 3 cups Rice, cooked and cooled (day-old rice is best)
    • ½ cup Green Onions, sliced
    • 1 tbsp. Ginger, grated
    • ½ tbsp. Garlic, grated
    • 2 tbsp. Soy Sauce
    • 1 tsp. Sesame Seeds

Some pretty basic stuff, right? You'd be surprised only a couple of ingredients can create such a delicious flavor.

By the way, I use some of these ingredients to make this Red Lobster shrimp scampi recipe. So, if you end up with some extra garlic and butter you'll want to check that out next. It's so, so good.

    Ingredient Substitutions and Suggestions

Now, this recipe for hibachi fried rice does call for day-old rice. But, if you don't have any leftovers, you can still make this recipe with freshly cooked rice. Don't worry, it'll be almost just as delicious with the fresh stuff.

When it comes to rice, for traditional Japanese fried rice, you'll want to use short-grain rice. Whereas, for Chinese fried rice, you'll want to use long-grain white rice like jasmine rice. Really anything you have will work great, but those are just two suggestions for two different styles of hibachi fried rice.

For the sesame oil, I prefer toasted sesame oil as this has the richest sesame flavor. If you aren't a big fan of that flavor, then stick with the non-toasted sesame oil or even vegetable oil.

And for additional flavor, I occasionally like to add in some frozen veggies like peas, broccoli, carrots, and even corn. After all, this recipe is all about flexibility!

How To Make Hibachi Fried Rice

If you ever thought it was hard - or even impossible - to make hibachi rice that tastes like the one from a restaurant, I'm here to tell you it's actually super easy.

Again, just 3 simple steps and less than 20 minutes is all it takes to make. And, honestly, after you've made this recipe once, you'll be able to make hibachi fried rice again and again with ease.

Now, let's stop wasting time and get to it!

A wok with sautéed veggies cooking in the wok. The wok is on a grey counter and there is a bowl of sesame seeds next to the wok.

    Step 1: Cook The Egg

First, we're going to start off by cooking the eggs. To do this, grab your favorite wok - or large skillet - and set the stovetop to high heat.

Then, add some sesame oil to it, followed by the eggs. Now, cook the eggs for a few minutes, moving them around the pan constantly until cooked, then remove and set aside.

A wok with cooked rice, soy sauce, and veggies cooking. The wok is on a grey counter and a bowl of sesame seeds is in the corner.

    Step 2: Cook The Rice

In the same wok, add the butter and more oil (if needed), and once it's hot, add the green onion, ginger, and garlic. Sauté everything for a couple of minutes until fragrant.

Next, add the rice and soy sauce, and mix everything together to combine all of the ingredients.

To finish up, press the rice gently into the wok to create a nice crust on the bottom.

    Step 3: Serve

Now serve your hibachi fried rice hot alongside anything you want!

Top it with sesame seeds and diced green onions, and enjoy.

How To Store Hibachi Fried Rice

So, this recipe for hibachi fried rice will make 2 dinner-portion servings or 4 side dish servings.

With that said, if you think you'll need - or want more - adjust the ingredients accordingly.

By the way, if you have any leftovers consider yourself lucky because this fried rice tastes even better on the second day!

Now, as far as storing it goes, you can store the leftover fried rice in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge for up to 4 days. Just make sure you take into account how long the cooked rice has been in your fridge before making this recipe. You'll want to count those days towards the 4 I recommended.

Also, just so you know, if you want to keep the rice for longer, you can freeze it for up to 2 months.

    How to reheat Fried rice

Now, the best way to reheat this hibachi fried rice is to just put it back on the stovetop in a wok.

So, to do that, you'll want to set your stove-top to medium heat, and add the rice back to the wok with a few spoonfuls of water. Then, cook for a couple of minutes, stirring constantly until warm.

Alternatively, you can reheat the rice in the microwave. First, add the rice to a microwave-safe bowl, then add a couple of spoonfuls of water or a single ice cube to the bowl. Microwave in 20-second increments, stirring between each one, until thoroughly heated.

FAQs about this hibachi fried rice

Why does hibachi fried rice taste different?

Hibachi fried rice tastes different because of the texture that the rice takes on, along with how everything cooks together in one skillet. Also, unlike traditional Chinese fried rice, this Japanese fried rice style uses butter to do most of the cooking. This gives the rice a delicious flavor that can't be achieved any other way.

What seasoning do hibachi chefs use?

Hibachi chefs typically use seasonings like garlic, ginger, and soy sauce to create their signature fried rice dishes. But all chefs have secret ingredients that they add to their dishes which makes them so unique and delicious.
