The Best Instant Pot French Onion Soup

If you have ever made French onion soup, you know that it takes FOREVER to cook. And if you don't watch it the entire time, you can easily overcook the onions and ruin the texture.

Well, thankfully, Instant Pots exist, and they make it incredibly quick & easy to throw together some French onion soup.

Seriously, making French onion soup Instant Pot "style" will change your life.

Ok, that might have been a bit of an exaggeration, but the pressure cooker really does make it a breeze to caramelize the onions, and cooks the soup perfectly every time.

Not to mention, the soup is literally done - cheese melted on top and all - in less than 30 minutes!

By the way, if you're looking for some more Instant Pot soup recipes that are warm and hearty, I can't recommend this Instant Pot Corn Chowder, or this Instant Pot Split Pea Soup enough.

I am white counter with a small white bowl with Parmesan cheese and a spoon in it, a white bowl filled with French onion soup, and a part of a white bowl on top of a white napkin.

    INGREDIENTS

Now, the ONLY downfall of this recipe is that you might have to take a trip to the grocery store for some of the ingredients.

But don't let ordering groceries or taking a trip to the store stop you from making this Instant Pot french onion soup - it's is one hundred percent worth it.

Anyway, here is what you'll to make the soup:

    • 4 Sweet Onions, sliced
    • 4 cups Beef Broth
    • 2 tbsp. Butter
    • 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 tbsp. Balsamic Vinegar
    • 1 Garlic Cloves, minced
    • 2 tsp. Brown Sugar
    • 2 tsp. Dry Thyme
    • 1 Bay Leaf
    • Salt and Pepper

    And to top it off:

    • 2 Slices of sourdough bread, toasted
    • ¼ cup Grated parmesan cheese
    • Salt and Pepper

So, maybe you have everything you need to get started on this recipe. But if not, grab those ingredients ASAP!

And make sure to pick up an entire loaf of sourdough bread. You can use it to make this Sourdough French Toast for breakfast!

I white counter with a white bowl on it filled with French onion soup.

    OTHER TOPPINGS

So, I used some grated parmesan cheese and sourdough bread to top off my french onion soup.

The most classic cheese to use is shredded gruyere cheese. But you can also use:

    • Shredded swiss cheese
    • Shredded mozzarella cheese
    • Slices of provolone cheese
    • Grated fontina cheese

Then for the bread on top, you can use:

    • French bread
    • Italian bread
    • Baguette
    • Or really any other bread you want

So, as you can see, there are a ton of ways to customize this Instant Pot french onion soup, depending on your preference!

My favorite thing to do is change up the bread and cheese combination every time I make it. But whatever you choose, this soup will be delicious!

HOW TO MAKE INSTANT POT FRENCH ONION SOUP

The process of making this Instant Pot French Onion Soup is so simple.

I like to call it a dump-and-go recipe. You just dump the ingredients in the Instant Pot, go watch a little tv, and before you know it, it's ready to be devoured.

As I said in the beginning, this is so much quicker than a traditional french onion soup recipe. So if you're ready for this rich, savory, and flavorful Instant Pot french onion soup, jump into making the recipe!

    STEP 1: ADD THE INGREDIENTS

First, gather all of your ingredients so they're ready to go. And if you haven't sliced your onions yet, don't forget to do that!

Next, add the sweet onion slices, beef broth, butter, Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, garlic cloves, brown sugar, dry thyme, bay leaf, salt, and pepper to the Instant Pot.

And instant pot on a white counter filled with French onion soup ingredients.

    STEP 2: COOKING THE SOUP

Now that all of those ingredients are in the Instant Pot, it' time to cook the soup!

So close the lid and cook at low pressure for 20 minutes.

Then when 20 minutes is up, release all of the steam, and when it is safe to do so, open the lid.

And that's it, you literally just made your soup - I told you it was easy!

    STEP 3: FINISHING AND SERVING

Technically, this step is optional, but is it really french onion soup without the melty cheese and soft bread on top?

To finish off the soup, add the toasted sourdough bread on top, followed quickly by the parmesan cheese. By the way, a lot of times I like to broil my soup in the oven after I add the bread and cheese to it.

Then once the cheese is nice and melted, serve this delicious french onion soup and enjoy!

HOW TO STORE FRENCH ONION SOUP

So, this soup will make 2-4 servings depending on how you use the bread.

Then if you have any leftover soup, just transfer it to an airtight container and store it in the fridge for up to 4 days.

By the way, make sure you store the soup without the bread on top and add it in after reheating.

Also, if you want to keep your soup for longer, you can also freeze it. Just make sure it cools down completely and then transfer it to an airtight container or freezer-safe bags for up to 3 months. Again, you'll want to freeze it without the bread on top.

    REHEATING FRENCH ONION SOUP

Now, if you're eating the soup from the fridge, you can just pop it in the microwave for a quick reheating method. Or you can also reheat it in a saucepan on the stove.

Either way, warm until it is heated through, reaches your desired temperature, and immediately top with a slice of bread.

If you're reheating the frozen soup, let it thaw in the fridge overnight when you know you'll be eating it the next day. Then warm and prepare the same way as above.

Well, now you know how to make Instant Pot french onion soup in under 30 minutes!

This soup makes for the most delicious main dish, side, or even appetizer on a chilly day. It is just so warm, comforting, and loaded with flavor.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this Instant Pot French Onion Soup as much as I do!
