Ingredients
The ingredients used in this peppermint brownie recipe are all common baking ingredients. In fact, I bet you have most - if not all - of them in your kitchen right now!
Anyway, here's what you'll need to make this peppermint brownie recipe:
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup sugar
- ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ teaspoon peppermint extract
- ½ teaspoon sea salt
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup flour
- ½ cup dark chocolate chips or chopped chocolate pieces
- 2 tablespoon crushed peppermint candies or crushed candy canes
Yup, that's it! Simple stuff, right?
By the way, this peppermint bark and peppermint fudge use a lot of the same ingredients that these brownies do. So, if you're looking for two more chocolatey recipes, give those a try too!
How to Make Peppermint Brownies
Now, as I mentioned before, this peppermint brownie recipe is really easy to make.
Essentially all you have to do is cook the ingredients in a saucepan, pour the batter into a pan, and then bake the brownies to perfection. It's that simple!
But, don't just take my word for it, see for yourself.
Anyway, now let's get baking!
Step 1: Melt the Butter
Start by preheating the oven to 325°F (160°C) and then line an 8-inch square pan with parchment paper.
Next, take out a saucepan - or pot - and put it on the stovetop over medium heat. Now you can add the butter to it and cook for a minute or so until the butter melts.
Step 2: Make the Batter
So, now that the butter is melted you can remove the saucepan from the heat, and add the sugar, cocoa powder, and salt to it. Then, you'll want to stir these ingredients together until you have a smooth mixture. When you do, set the saucepan back on the burner and let it heat until it's warm.
Now, once the mixture is warm, you can add the eggs to the saucepan one at a time and whisk them after each addition. Then, you can add the flour, half of the chocolate chips, and peppermint extract and stir everything together until it's just incorporated.
By the way, the peppermint extract adds a bolder peppermint flavor to the brownies, along with the crushed candy canes that I think are just absolutely delicious. But if you want a more subtle peppermint flavor in your brownies, you don't have to add it.
Step 3: Bake The Brownies
Now, once the batter is combined, you'll want to immediately pour the melted chocolate chips mixture into the prepared pan and top it with the remaining semi sweet chocolate chips and crushed peppermint candies. Oh, by the way, you can also use crushed candy canes instead of peppermint candies here.
Anyway, now you'll want to bake the brownies for 25 minutes, and then you'll want to let them cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.
Finally, slice the chocolate peppermint brownies into squares, and, if you're feeling extra, you can top them off with a sprinkle of powdered sugar. By the way, you can also top the brownies with cream cheese frosting and add some more crushed candy canes on top of the cream cheese frosting for the ultimate brownies. Enjoy!
How to Store Peppermint Brownies
This recipe for peppermint brownies will make about 12 servings, depending on how you cut them.
Honestly, they're so delicious that I wouldn't be surprised if you don't have any left after you serve them. I know that's always the case when we put them out.
With that said though, if you do have some leftover chocolate peppermint brownies, you can store them in an airtight container for about 3-4 days. Then, whenever you want to eat one, you can enjoy it at room temperature or warm it up in the microwave for about 10 seconds.
Alternatively, if you want to store the cooled brownies for even longer, you can store them in an airtight container - or freezer-safe bag with the excess air squeezed out - and they'll last in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Wrapping It Up
That's how to make peppermint brownies!
I know I'm biased, but I think these are the best brownies you'll ever have. The chocolate and peppermint together are an explosion of deliciousness that is like no other. And the brownies are perfectly moist, chewy, and fudgy.
You seriously won't find a better dessert for Christmas than this one. I make them every single year and they've become a staple for my family during the holiday season.
Anyway, I hope you like these easy peppermint brownies as much as my family and I do.
