    The Best Christmas Crack

The holiday season is by far my favorite time of the year, and I think the best part of the holidays is, of course, the desserts!

And I have a ton of Christmas desserts on the blog, but one of the most deliciously addictive desserts I've ever made is this Christmas crack recipe. It's a unique treat that my family is just obsessed with, and it's honestly not the holidays in the Cunningham household without it.

With that said, if you've somehow never heard of Christmas crack candy before, it combines the best of both worlds - salty and sweet. The saltiness comes from some saltine crackers, and the sweetness comes from some melted chocolate and homemade caramel sauce. Combine all of those things together, and top 'em with toffee bits, and you're talking about a one-of-a-kind treat everyone will love.

Best of all, this recipe is effortless to put together - it takes just a few minutes to make! Honestly, the hardest part about making it is waiting for the saltine cracker toffee candy to chill in the fridge.

By the way, this recipe is super easy to customize. You can use anything from chopped pecans to crushed candy canes and make this recipe a little bit different every time - kind of like this white trash recipe.

    Ingredients

Now, another reason to love this Christmas crack recipe is that it's made with just a few basic ingredients. In fact, you probably have most - if not all - of them on hand already.

Anyway, here's what you'll need to make this saltine cracker candy:

    • 16 saltine crackers
    • 4 oz. unsalted butter
    • 4 oz. brown sugar
    • 10 oz. chopped dark chocolate
    • 4 oz. white chopped chocolate
    • Toffee bits, as desired, or salted caramel

    Pretty simple, eh?

By the way, if you have some leftover chocolate, you can use it to make this puppy chow next!

An assortment of ingredients including bowls of butter, chocolate, brown sugar, crackers, chopped nuts, and white chocolate.

    Ingredient Substitutions And Suggestions

Now, I think this Christmas crack recipe is perfect as is. But, as I mentioned earlier, you can totally change it up and put your own spin on it.

For instance, you can substitute the chopped chocolate for an equal amount of any kind of chocolate chip. I've used dark chocolate chips, semi-sweetened chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, and even caramel ones in place of the chopped chocolate and this Christmas crack has turned out delicious every time.

As for the crackers, I love a good saltine since it has a bigger surface area to work with. But, you can also use club crackers or Ritz crackers for a bite-sized version of this sweet and salty snack. If you want to highlight the sweetness, you could even use graham crackers!

When it comes to optional toppings, I think toffee bits are the perfect addition to make saltine cracker toffee candy, but you certainly don't have to stop there. You can also add things like chopped pecans, white chips, mini chocolate chips, and even peanut butter chips.

Finally, to up the holiday vibes, you can even add some crushed candy canes, red and green sprinkles, and M&Ms. The opportunities are endless!

    How To Make Christmas Crack

Now it's time for the fun part - making some Christmas crack!

And, again, it could not be easier to make this saltine toffee candy. All you have to do is make the caramel, melt the chocolate, and then put everything together on each saltine cracker. Who said a delicious holiday dessert had to be complicated?!

Anyway, I know by now you're probably ready to eat this saltine cracker toffee candy, so let's stop wasting time and get cooking.

    Step 1: Prep Work

First things first, you'll want to preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Then, place your saltines (or graham crackers or Ritz crackers) evenly on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper and set it aside. Also, just so you know you'll want to line the crackers right up next to each other, so it's easier to assemble them throughout the recipe.

    Step 2: Make The Caramel

Now it's time to make the homemade caramel sauce.

To start, grab a saucepan - or pot - and add the unsalted butter and brown sugar to it. Put the pot over medium heat and bring the unsalted butter and brown sugar mixture to a boil. Then, continue to cook for 3 minutes, stirring continuously to prevent it from burning. By the way, if you have a candy thermometer, you can place that in the pot and make sure the caramel doesn't go above 225°F.

Anyway, after 3 minutes is up, carefully pour the caramel mixture on top of the saltine crackers and evenly spread the caramel layer over the entire surface of each one.

Then, after you've taken care of that, you can put the baking sheet in the oven and bake the crackers for about 6 minutes - this will help thicken the caramel and make the crackers extra crispy.

    Step 3: Add The Chocolate

Once the crackers are baked, you can remove the baking sheet from the oven and sprinkle milk chocolate chips or chopped milk chocolate on top. Then, let everything sit for about 2-3 minutes - or until the chocolate melts - and use a rubber spatula to spread the melted chocolate over the crackers.

Then, once you have the saltine crackers coated in chocolate, you can add the toffee bits - or any toppings you want, like crushed candy canes - on top, and set them aside to cool to room temperature.

Step 4: Add The White Chocolate Drizzle

Now, while the candy coated saltine crackers are cooling, you'll want to melt the white chocolate. And the best way to do this is to add the chopped white chocolate - or white chocolate chips - to a bowl, and microwave 'em in 30-second increments - stirring between each one - until they're fully melted.

Then, when the crackers are cooled, and the white chocolate has melted, you can drizzle the melted chocolate on top of the coated saltine toffee crackers.

Finally, you can put your candy in the fridge and allow it to cool completely.

Then, when it cools, you can break the Christmas crack into pieces and enjoy it!

    How To Store Christmas Crack

This recipe for Christmas crack will make 16 crackers worth, but you can always double or triple the recipe if you want more!

Honestly, this sweet and salty snack is so addicting - and everyone won't be able to stop picking at it - that I definitely suggest making more than the recipe calls for.

Then, if you have any leftover Christmas crack, you can store it in an airtight container and keep it on the counter for about 3 days or in the fridge for about 2 weeks.

Alternatively, if you want to keep your saltine cracker toffee candy for even longer, you can freeze it in an airtight container or freezer-safe bag with the air squeezed out for about 2 months. You'll just want to let it thaw for a few minutes before enjoying it again.
