The Best Peppermint Bark
The holiday season calls for many traditions, and there isn't a food tradition I love more than making this peppermint bark. I mean, what's not to love about it - it's quick and easy to make, and it results in some high-quality chocolate candy that tastes like it was whipped up by a chocolatier.
Seriously, this peppermint bark is the entire package! It's a little bit sweet, a little refreshing, and a lot delicious.
The smooth semi-sweet chocolate just mixes so well with the lighter-than-air white chocolate and it creates the perfect base for the crunchy pepperminty candy canes on top.
Gah, it's just so tasty!
Plus, the steps to make this peppermint bark recipe are so easy too! In fact, just 3 simple steps are all you'll need to follow to whip it up.
And it's so quick to put together too. Honestly, one of the best things about this peppermint bark recipe is that you don't have to wait for the melted white chocolate layer to harden - as you do in some chocolate bark recipes - before topping it with the melted semi-sweet chocolate layer.
Since the two chocolates are mixed together in this recipe, you can harden them at the same time!
Honestly, it's probably the quickest recipe for peppermint bark that you'll find.
By the way, if you're looking for some more delicious chocolate dessert recipes to make for the holidays, this fantasy fudge, puppy chow, and this Christmas crack are some of my favorites.
Ingredients
So, this peppermint bark recipe is made with just 4 ingredients. And I've got a feeling that you've got most - if not all - of them in your pantry right now.
Anyway, here's what you'll need to make this peppermint bark:
- 6 oz semi-sweet chocolate chunks
- 8 oz white chocolate chunks
- ½ tsp. peppermint extract
- ½ cup crushed candy canes
How great is that list?!
By the way, if you have the chocolate and candy canes, you can use them to whip up this peppermint fudge or peppermint cheesecake next!
Ingredient Substitutions and Suggestions
Trust me, this recipe is a hit when it's made exactly as written. But, with that said, you can always modify some things to put your own personal flare on it, so I left some ideas below in case you'd like to do that.
First, this recipe calls for semi-sweet chocolate chunks, but you can use milk chocolate chunks, dark chocolate chunks, or even different flavored chocolate chips in their place! As for the white chocolate chunks, you can always use white chocolate chips in their place instead.
Lastly, if you don't have candy canes on hand, you can use crushed peppermint candies in their place. You'll get that same refreshing peppermint flavor - and crunch - to your chocolate bark if you do.
By the way, for even smoother chocolate, you can add a little bit of coconut oil to each bowl of chocolate to melt it together.
How to Make Peppermint Bark
Alright, now it's finally time to make this peppermint bark!
As I've said a few times, it's super easy to create this peppermint bark from scratch. Basically, you're going to melt chocolate, create a marble pattern, top it with the crushed candy canes, let it harden, and you're done!
So, with that said, let's not waste another second and get to it!
Step 1: Melt The Chocolate
First things first, line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside for later.
Next, you can take out two large bowls and add the white chocolate to one and the chocolate of your choice to another. Then one at a time, put each bowl in the microwave in 30-second increments, stirring between each one until the chocolate has fully melted.
When the bowl with white chocolate is melted, add the peppermint extract - or peppermint oil - to it and mix it to combine with the chocolate.
Step 2: Marble The Chocolate
Now that both chocolates are melted, you can pour them in a chess pattern over the prepared baking sheet and use a fork, straw, or toothpick to make swirls - like the picture below.
Step 3: Top with Peppermint Candy
Once you've achieved your desired design, top the melted chocolate mixture evenly with some crushed candy canes and put it in the fridge until the chocolate hardens.
Then, when the peppermint bark has hardened, break the chocolate into any-sized pieces that you want with your hands. For what it's worth, I like to break my bark into a bunch of different sizes, then there's a piece for everyone.
By the way, If you feel compelled, this peppermint bark is easily gifted. Just add it to a festive holiday bag, and you have the perfect little gift!
How to Store Peppermint Bark
This recipe for peppermint bark makes about 4 delicious large servings - usually around 4-6 pieces of bark is what I consider one serving. With that said, if you're sharing - or serving this peppermint bark at a party - I doubt you'll have leftovers.
If you do happen to save a few pieces though, you'll be happy to know this peppermint bark stores really well! To store it, just transfer your leftovers to an airtight container and they'll stay good at room temperature in a dark, cool place for 2-3 weeks. Alternatively, if you keep it in the fridge in an airtight container, it'll last for 2-3 months.
By the way, if you want to keep it for even longer, you can store it in an airtight container or wrap it in plastic wrap, and it'll last in the freezer for 6 months.

My family absolutely loves eating this around the holiday season, and I have a feeling yours will too!

The most fun peppermint bark I've come across. I have only made the layered bark but this was an eye catcher and it tastes great too!
