The Best No Bake Chocolate Pie
This no bake chocolate pie recipe is a keeper!
I love fresh-baked pies made from scratch, but you have to admit they take a lot of work. From prepping the crust to cooking the filling, assembling the pie, decorating, and baking it, it can be a lot of steps just to get one on the table!
That's why I'm so happy to share this no bake chocolate pie with you guys. It's made with simple ingredients - and an even simpler baking process - and I think you're going to fall in love with everything this chocolate pie has to offer.
I mean, the chocolate filling itself is to die for. Honestly, it might be my favorite pie filling ever.
Now, the secret to making this rich, smooth, indulgent chocolate pie filling is beating your whipped cream until you get peaks. That gives this no bake chocolate cream pie a rich yet light and fluffy texture.
So, definitely make sure to follow that step exactly as outlined later on in this post. It's a "major key" as DJ Khaled would say.
Ingredients
The ingredients for this no bake chocolate pie are really basic. If you love to bake, you probably have most of them in your pantry already.
Even if you don't, they're regular items you can pick up at the grocery store without any problem to make the perfect chocolate pie.
Here's what you'll need to make this no bake chocolate pie recipe:
- 16 Oreos, with the cream removed
- 4 tbsps. melted butter
- 8 oz. chocolate (use dark, semisweet, or whatever you prefer!)
- 1 ⅔ cup whipping cream (for melting the chocolate)
- 1 tbsp. of vanilla extract
- ¼ cup cocoa powder
- ¼ cup of sugar
And for the topping:
- Whipped cream
- 2 tbsp. crumbled Oreos or shaved chocolate
Pretty simple ingredients to make one decadent pie. And you can actually use a lot of these same ingredients to make my no bake Oreo pie, so you'll definitely want to check that out next!
Ingredients Additions & Substitutions
Now, while this recipe is amazing as is, there's a lot of room for customization here.
For instance, you can totally change up the pie crust for this recipe. Use your favorite graham cracker pie crust in place of the Oreo crust for less of a chocolate flavor. And if you want to save time, you can buy an Oreo cookie pie crust from the store instead of making the Oreo pie crust from scratch.
Then for the pie filling, you use half melted chocolate and half Nutella for a different chocolate flavor, kind of like in this 2 ingredient fudge.
Or use half chocolate and half peanut butter to give it more of a Reese's feel. However, I do have a super delicious Reese's pie recipe up on the blog already that I highly recommend making if you're a peanut butter and chocolate fan.
By the way, I always serve my chocolate cream pie with chocolate shaving and fresh whipped cream on top. But you can top it with Oreo crumbs or even serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
How to Make No Bake Chocolate Pie
Since this is a no bake chocolate pie, you don't need to use the oven! So it's ideal if you're making it alongside any other dishes that will be served for your main course.
And, as I mentioned earlier, the process of making this no bake chocolate cream pie could not be any easier.
So let's not waste any more time and get right to it!
Step 1: Make the Oreo pie crust
The first thing you'll want to do is make the Oreo crust.
To do that, put the Oreos in a food processor - or blender - and pulse until the cookies are crumbs and grainy. If you don't have a food processor - or blender - you can crush the Oreos with a rolling pin inside a Ziplock bag.
Next, add the Oreo crumbs to a bowl and mix them with the melted butter.
Then, pour the mixture into a pie dish - I used a 7 inch dish - and try to evenly distribute the Oreo cookie crumbs on the bottom and up the sides of the pie dish. Use a spoon or your fingers to press it down, so it's a tight and compacted pie crust.
Now place the Oreo cookie crust in the fridge and let it firm up for an hour or so.
You can also use this time to chill your whipped cream, the bowl you'll use for beating, and the beaters themselves. It's easier to get a stable whipped cream if everything is cold!
Step 2: Melt the chocolate
So, when the Oreo cookie crust is almost chilled, you can start making the filling for this no bake chocolate cream pie.
Start by adding the chocolate and ⅔ cup of whipping cream to a microwave-safe bowl. You want to take your time melting these together. If your chocolate mixture gets too hot, it will seize and become unusable.
So microwave it in 20 to 30 second intervals, stirring well after each one until the chocolate is melted and fully combined with the cream.
Then, set this aside to cool while you move on to the next step.
Step 3: Make the chocolate filling
In a large mixing bowl, beat the remaining whipping cream - 1 cup of it - and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. This usually takes me about 5 minutes with my stand mixer.
However, you can definitely do this by hand but be prepared for some serious arm workout!
Anyway, after that, very gently fold the melted chocolate, sugar, cocoa powder, and cream mixture together. Also, I suggest sifting the cocoa powder and sugar before adding them to the mixture. This will help avoid any lumps in your final filling.
Step 4: Complete The Pie
Once everything is well combined, pour the chocolate filling into your chilled Oreo cookie crust. Again, try to be gentle, so you don't deflate all that whipped cream goodness.
Then, smooth out the top with a spoon or an offset spatula, and pop it into your fridge. Chill the chocolate cream pie for at least 4 hours or overnight if you can.
By the way, don't place it in the freezer. You want it to set and firm up, but you don't want it to be rock-hard.
Step 5: Serve and enjoy
When you're ready to serve, top this chocolate cream pie with more whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa powder.
You can also garnish it with chocolate shavings, chocolate chips, or even more crushed Oreos. Or try drizzling it with salted caramel, topping it with crushed nuts, or adding colorful sprinkles to it for a fun twist! Let your imagination (and sweet tooth) guide you here!
Then, once your chilled pie is complete, slice it up, serve with chocolate shaving and fresh whipped cream on top, and enjoy!
How to Store No Bake Chocolate Pie
So, this recipe for chocolate cream pie will make about 8 decadent slices. And if you're serving it at a party or holiday celebration, there's a small chance that there will be any left.
But, if there is, you can store the leftover pie slices in an airtight container, or you can cover the pie dish tightly with plastic wrap. Stored like this the pie will last in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Can You Freeze No Bake Chocolate Pie?
You can definitely freeze this chocolate cream pie, but freezing it will change the consistency of the filling once it's thawed. It won't be as smooth and airy, but will still taste delicious.
With that said, if you do decide to freeze it, make sure it's tightly wrapped, or store it in airtight containers. The pie will last for up to 2 months in the freezer.
Then, when you want it, just thaw it in the fridge overnight before serving!
