How To Make Swiss Chicken Casserole
1. Prepare: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and coat a casserole dish or baking dish with a bit of nonstick spray. Salt and pepper each chicken breast and put one slice of Swiss cheese on each piece of chicken. Place each breast in the prepared casserole dish.
2. Make the cheese sauce: Melt the butter in a pot over medium heat. Add the flour to the melted butter and let it cook for 1 minute. Add the chicken broth, salt, and pepper, and whisk well to combine. Cook until the sauce thickens, then add the sliced Swiss cheese or shredded Swiss cheese and stir. Once melted together and smooth, spread the sauce over the chicken.
3. Bake: Top the chicken with the dry stuffing mix and bake, covered for 40 minutes. Remove the cover and cook for another 20 minutes until the stuffing is toasted and the chicken is cooked through.
4. Serve: Serve the chicken warm with any leftover sauce, along with any sides you want. Enjoy!
My Tips For Making The Best Recipe
- Use cream of chicken soup or cream of mushroom soup instead of the Swiss cheese sauce. I'll do this simple swap if I don't have a lot of time to prepare dinner.
- Add a teaspoon of garlic powder and onion powder to the cheese sauce for a more savory flavor.
- Top the chicken with crushed Ritz crackers instead of the dry stuffing mix. I've done this a number of times, and I can't decide which topping is better - they're both so delicious!
- Try making the recipe with boneless chicken thighs instead of boneless chicken breasts.
- Serve the chicken with a dollop of sour cream for an extra creamy texture and tangy flavor.
