Ingredient Substitutions And Suggestions
When I make this street taco recipe, I always use the ingredients listed above since I just think it tastes best that way. However, you definitely can make some adjustments to it if you'd like to put your own spin on the tacos!
For instance, this recipe calls for flank steak, but if you want to use skirt steak, chuck steak, or ground beef, you definitely can! You'll still season the meat and cook it the same as the flank steak, but the cooking time will vary.
Now if you want to amp up the flavor of the steak, then you can add either a dash of chili powder or a splash of soy sauce to the steak just before cooking it. Just remember to go light on the add-ons so they don't overwhelm the finished tacos.
As for additional ingredients, I like to add refried beans, cojita cheese, queso freco, hot sauce, sour cream, or pico de Gallo. Any of those go great in the already delicious street tacos, but really don't need to add much since they're already so darn good!
How To Make Street Tacos
Not to sound like a broken record, but you'll be blown away by how easy these homemade street tacos are to make. Honestly, the next time you're craving steak tacos, you probably won't even need to look at the recipe!
So, with that said, let's stop wasting time and make street tacos!
Step 1: Cook The Onions And Steak
First, you'll want to begin by cutting the flank steak into equal bite-sized pieces. Then you can take out a large skillet, add the oil to it, and heat it over medium heat.
As soon as the oil is hot, you'll want to add half of the onion to the skillet and cook it for about 5 minutes until it's nice and soft. Then, you can add the steak to the skillet and season it with salt, pepper, and lime juice.
Now continue cooking the steak for about 5-6 minutes or until it's fully cooked through.
Step 2: Fry The Tortillas
While the steak is cooking, you can grab a second skillet and heat half of the butter in it over medium heat. Once the butter melts, add the mini corn tortillas or flour tortillas and fry them for about 1 minute. Then you'll want to heat the remaining butter and fry the remaining tortillas.
As soon as the tortillas finish frying up, you can transfer the warmed corn tortillas to a plate and allow them to cool for a minute or two, then stack them in pairs of two so you have two stacks of four tortillas.
Step 3: Assemble The Tacos
Now that everything is good to go, it's time to assemble the street tacos!
First, you'll want to divide the cooked carne asada meat evenly amongst the 8 corn tortillas. Then you can top the meat with the reserved onions and cilantro and any other fillings you want.
Finally, serve the tacos warm with some fresh lime wedges on the side, and enjoy!
How To Store Street Tacos
This recipe for street tacos makes 8 tacos, so it really is the perfect family dinner for Taco Tuesday! And, of course, you can always double or triple the recipe if you want more tacos.
Then if you end up with leftovers, you can store the carne asada meat in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. As for the rest of the ingredients, they're best prepared fresh when you're ready to eat the steak again.
How To Reheat Carne Asada Tacos
Now to reheat the street tacos, you'll want to warm the steak in a skillet with olive oil over medium heat for a few minutes until thoroughly warmed. Make sure to mix 'em around the skillet the entire time so everything reheats evenly.
Then to assemble the tacos, heat up the tortillas on a skillet with butter and then add the steak, onions, cilantro, lime juice, and anything else you want to the warm tortillas.
