The Best Chipotle Tomatillo Green Chili Salsa
I don't know about you, but I always get green salsa when I go to Chipotle. I mean, it just has the perfect balance of tangy and spicy flavors, and I love how it makes my burrito bowls taste so much brighter and fresher.
And, well, since my family and I can't get enough of the green salsa at Chipotle, I just knew I had to come up with my own recipe for it. Now, I know I'm a bit biased, but I really think this tomatillo green chili salsa turned out just as good as Chipotle's! It has all the amazing flavors you'd want/expect and it just tastes so fresh too.
Also, in addition to tasting great, I just love how easy this recipe is to make. You basically just roast the tomatillos and tomatoes until they're soft and slightly blackened, then blend them with your spices.
Yup, that's all there is to it!
It's so simple, yet the results are anything but ordinary. Honestly, this spicy tomatillo green chili salsa everything taste better - burritos, burrito bowls, corn chips, you name it!
Also, since this Chipotle copycat salsa recipe only requires one baking sheet and a food processor, clean-up is a breeze too! And you know I'm a big fan of that.
By the way, while the tomatillos and tomatoes roast in the oven, you'll have plenty of time to whip up a delicious main course to serve with the salsa. I love pairing it with this Chipotle chicken, cilantro lime rice, Chipotle fajita veggies, and these Chipotle pinto beans for a complete Chipotle experience.

Anyway, here's everything you'll need to make it:
- 1 lb. tomatillos, husks removed, halved
- 2 small green tomatoes, halved
- 2 cherry tomatoes, halved
- 1 jalapeno pepper, sliced
- ¼ cup red onion, chopped
- ½ teaspoon garlic paste

- 2 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoon lime juice
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Tortilla chips to serve
Pretty simple stuff, right?!
By the way, if you're in need of some delicious homemade tortilla chips, then you should definitely try these air fryer tortilla chips to serve with your salsa! It's a family favorite, and it's so, so good.
Ingredient Substitutions And Suggestions
Now, while I recommend making this copycat Chipotle tomatillo salsa with the ingredients listed above, there are some ways you can put your own spin on it and possibly save yourself a trip to the store as well.
With that said, if all you have are tomatillos - and no other kinds of tomatoes - then you can definitely replace the green tomatoes and cherry tomatoes with more tomatillos. I've actually had to do this a couple of times when I've been in a pinch, and the salsa turned out great both times.
Now, if you like your green salsa spicy, then you can increase the amount of fresh jalapeño you use to make it. So, instead of using 1 jalapeño to make it, try using 2-3 of 'em.
Lastly, if all you have is lemon juice or lime juice - and not both - you can substitute one of them for more of the other. It will change the taste of the salsa a little bit if you do, but it will still be bangin'.
How To Make Chipotle Tomatillo Green Chili Salsa
As I've mentioned a few times, this tomatillo green chili salsa recipe is actually really, really easy to make. After you roast the tomatillos and tomatoes, the rest of the recipe will take no more than 5 minutes to put together!
So, with all that said, let's stop wasting time and make some Chipotle tomatillo green chili salsa, shall we?!
Step 1: Roast The Tomatillos And Tomatoes
First things first, you'll want to preheat your oven to 500°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Then, after you've done that, you can remove the husks from the fresh tomatillos and remove the stems from the tomatoes, if there are any.
Now you can place the tomatillos, green tomatoes, and cherry tomatoes on the baking sheet and roast them in the oven for 20 minutes.
Step 2: Blend The Salsa
When the tomatillos and tomatoes are done roasting, you can transfer them to a blender - or food processor - and add the jalapeno pepper, raw red onion, cilantro, cumin powder, garlic paste, and lemon and lime juices to it. Then, blend everything together until you have a smooth mixture.
Once your salsa is blended, you can give it a taste and then season it with any salt or pepper you think it might need. Then, after you add in the S&P, you can give the salsa one last blend to combine them into the salsa.
Step 3: Serve The Salsa
Once your salsa has been fully blended - and the seasonings have been adjusted to your tastes/preferences - you can transfer your salsa to a large bowl and serve it with the chips of your choice.
Enjoy!

This recipe for Chipotle's tomatillo green chili salsa makes around 6 servings, so it's perfect for a quick appetizer or even as a side to go with your main course. In fact, you might even end up with some leftovers! Consider yourself lucky if you do.
Anyway, if you have any of this salsa left, you can store it in an airtight container in the fridge for about 5-7 days. Alternatively, if you'd like to store it for even longer, you can freeze the salsa for up to 2 months.
Wrapping It Up
Well, that's how to make Chipotle's tomatillo green chili salsa at home!
Again, I know I'm biased, but I really think this Chipotle green salsa recipe tastes nearly identical to the original, it's just so darn good. I don't know if it's the perfectly roasted tomatillos or the blend of fresh spices that makes it so yummy - I just know it's always a favorite of almost everyone who tries it when we put it out!
Anyway, I hope you like this easy green chili salsa recipe as much as I/we do.
