THE BEST KETO MOZZARELLA STICKS
Homemade keto mozzarella sticks are pretty much heaven on a plate.
I mean, it doesn't get any better than these mozzarella sticks - they're healthy, and they actually taste this good.
Along with being a cheesy keto appetizer, this recipe is also one of my favorite quick and easy low carb snacks to make.
And, let me tell you, these aren't just many mozzarella sticks. These low carb mozzarella sticks are deliciously cheesy both inside and out – they have an ooey-gooey mozzarella center wrapped in a crunchy seasoned parmesan coating.
Dip them in a side a low carb keto marinara sauce, and your tastebuds will be in heaven.
Also, nobody can tell these are keto cheese sticks when they eat them - so, if you have kids, this recipe will make you pretty popular around the house.
And even though they taste like traditional mozzarella sticks, each low carb cheese stick has less than 1 NET CARB - about 10 times less than normal mozzarella sticks.
Plus, this recipe doesn't take a lot of time or effort to make and you only need 8 simple ingredients – most of which you may already have.
By the way, if you love crispy on the outside and tender on the inside appetizers like this one, you'll want to check out my 3-ingredient keto french fries recipe. It's easily one of the most popular keto recipes on the blog – and for a good reason!
INGREDIENTS
So as I mentioned above, you only need 8 ingredients total to make this keto mozzarella stick recipe.
And besides the mozzarella cheese sticks, you probably have all these ingredients on hand and ready to go.
But if you don't have an ingredient, I highly suggest getting it - each one is necessary for creating the best flavor and texture for this recipe.
Anyway, here's what you'll need to make keto cheese sticks:
- 6 mozzarella sticks, sliced in half (mozzarella string cheese)
- 1 egg, beaten
- ½ cup almond flour
- ½ cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1-2 tablespoons coconut flour
- ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
As you can see, the ingredients are all stuff that's easy to find, that is if you don't have it on hand already.
Oh, and if you like the cheesy and crunchy coating on these keto mozzarella sticks, you can try my keto chicken nuggets recipe next – it has a similar parmesan coating and uses the same ingredients!
KETO Friendly FLOURS
Ok, so you may have noticed that this recipe calls for both almond flour and coconut flour.
However, I want to point out that you can not use the two interchangeably - coconut flour is too absorbent to use in place of almond flour.
With that said, you can substitute the almond flour for either sunflower or walnut flour. They're both great keto friendly flours that can be substituted with almond flour at a one-for-one measurement and will work just as well in this recipe instead of almond flour.
GRATE YOUR OWN CHEESE
As always, I suggest grating your own parmesan cheese for this recipe - or at least finding one that ONLY HAS parmesan cheese as an ingredient.
Pre-shredded cheese typically has an added layer of starch that prevents the cheese from clumping together. By doing this, the starches are increasing the carb count of the cheese.
So, if you want to keep these mozzarella sticks as low carb as possible, I recommend buying a block of cheese and using a cheese grater.
KETO FRIENDLY MARINARA SAUCE
Now, you'll probably want a keto friendly marinara sauce to dip your low carb mozzarella sticks in.
My favorite keto friendly marinara sauce is Rao's Homemade Pizza sauce - it has one of the lowest carb counts I've found in a tomato-based sauce, and it has a perfectly balanced flavor that pairs super well with these keto cheese sticks.
Just keep in mind that most marinara sauces have added sugars in them, so you want to make sure you read the nutrition label before picking one out.
HOW TO MAKE KETO MOZZARELLA STICKS
Now that we've covered a few important things, let's get down to the recipe for keto cheese sticks.
When it comes to making the perfect mozzarella sticks, it's all about the temperature of your frying oil and your mozzarella cheese.
Both of these factors create the best possible crunchy to melty ratio in the final product.
Having said that, you will have to freeze the mozzarella sticks for 1 hour before frying for the best results, so make sure you take that time into account if you want to enjoy them as soon as possible.
Step 1: PREPARING THE BREADING
The low carb coating for these keto mozzarella sticks has three layers, so you'll want to prepare three small bowls to place the different components in.
In the first bowl, beat one small egg until the yolk and whites have combined.
Then, in the second bowl, combine the almond flour, parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and sea salt.
Lastly, you are going to add just the coconut flour to a third bowl.
Arrange the bowls in a row for later so your coating station is ready to go!
Step 2: COATING THE CHEESE
Now, if you haven't already, cut your six mozzarella sticks in half to make 12 shorter mozzarella sticks.
Then, to coat them, start by covering a piece of mozzarella string cheese with coconut flour.
Once the piece is completely covered, dip it in the beaten egg and cover it again.
Next, you are going to roll the piece of mozzarella in your almond flour and parmesan mixture.
After that, place on a baking sheet and do this until all 12 mozzarella sticks are thoroughly coated.
Pro-tip: use one hand for covering the mozzarella sticks with flour and dipping it in egg, and the other hand for rolling it in the parmesan breading. This way, the coating won't build up on your fingers as you work.
Once all your mozzarella sticks are breaded, put the baking sheet in the freezer for at least 1 hour before you start frying. While it seems counterproductive, this actually prevents the cheese from melting and oozing out of the breading while cooking.
Step 3: FRYING THE MOZZARELLA STICKS
Ok, so when you're ready to cook the keto cheese sticks, pour your oil into a frying pan until it's at least half an inch high from the bottom.
Make sure to keep the frying oil at around 350°F - and to help you maintain your oil temperature, you can use a deep-fry thermometer. At this range, your mozzarella sticks will have a crunchy outside.
Then, once the oil is heated, fry each mozzarella stick until golden brown on all sides, gently turning while frying - this will only take a few minutes.
By the way, you will probably have to fry your sticks in two batches, depending on how big your pan is.
Now, the key to retaining a crispy and light coating on your mozzarella sticks after frying is to transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels or a wire rack. Otherwise, the excess oil will soak into the breading and result in soggy mozzarella sticks. And nobody likes soggy mozzarella sticks, am I right?!
Anyway, after you've let the excess oil fall away from the cooked mozzarella sticks, you're all set to dig in.
KETO MOZZARELLA STICKS IN THE AIR FRYER
Ok, so, if you would prefer to have air fryer keto mozzarella sticks, you can make them pretty quickly - it will take around 5-6 minutes for the cheese to reach that ooey-gooey, stretchy consistency that makes mozzarella sticks what they are.
Follow the same instructions up until step 3. Then, set the air fryer to 380°F (193°C) and cook for - as I just mentioned - 5-6 minutes.
Having said that, you'll want to check them every few minutes to make sure they don't overcook. You'll know they're done once the cheese starts to pop out from underneath the breading.
How To Store KETO MOZZARELLA STICKS
So, this keto mozzarella sticks recipe tastes best when it's freshly cooked. And honestly, they're usually gone before you can even think of storing any leftovers!
That being said, you can store any remaining keto cheese sticks in an airtight container in the refrigerator, where they'll last for around 7 days.
You can also keep the cooked mozzarella sticks in the freezer for as long as 8 months before they start to lose their texture. When you're ready to reheat your keto mozzarella cheese sticks, bake them in a 350°F (177°C) oven for about 10 minutes or until they reach your desired temperature.
And you can even prepare and freeze the uncooked mozzarella sticks ahead of time - you'll just want to fry them within 3 days after freezing.
Wrapping It Up
Well, that is how you make one of the tastiest and cheesiest low carb appetizers in existence.
Seriously, everyone who tries these keto mozzarella sticks won't be able to get enough of them. I mean, how often can you have fried food that is actually healthy?
And since the preparation process is simple, your family/kids can even give you a hand preparing these - and it will make for a fun family activity!
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this keto mozzarella sticks recipe as much as I do.

Delicious! My husband does not usually eat cheese sticks. He took one bite and said, “I’ll have those”. I used avocado oil. The breading tended to stick better, the longer the oil cooked. Will make again!
