The Best McDonald's Spicy Chicken Sandwich
The spicy crispy chicken sandwich at McDonald's is easily one of their best menu items.
The juicy and crispy breaded chicken has just the right amount of spice and pairs perfectly with the soft burger buns, mayo sauce, and veggies.
That said, McDonald's can be pretty inconsistent with the quality and freshness of their sandwiches. And, of course, it isn't the healthiest place to eat every day.
So, when you learn how easy it is to make one at home, I know you'll be hooked!
Whether it's Mcdonald's spicy crispy chicken sandwich or another fast food chain's version, this recipe will easily top both. Not to mention, this spicy crispy chicken sandwich only takes about 10 minutes to prep.
They're easy enough that you can make big batches of frozen chicken fillets for future sandwiches. That's what we like to do when we make 'em anyway.
By the way, this is just one of the recipes from our McDonald's copycat series! You can also check out a couple of my other favorites, like this Homemade egg McMuffin or these McDonald's chicken nuggets. And for something to drink, this McDonald's sweet tea.

The ingredient list for this crispy chicken sandwich is mainly pantry and spice cabinet staples.
And, trust me, after you eat one of these spicy chicken sandwiches, you'll want to make a big batch of this spice mix to make your next round of sandwiches go by even faster!

Ingredient Additions and Substitutions
I personally love to make my spicy crispy chicken sandwiches with a toasted potato bun like the ones McDonald's has. It's definitely well worth it if you can find them! But, if you can't, any kind of bun will work.
As for the veggies, you can add whatever you like. Crinkle-cut pickles or jalapenos are some welcome additions.
For the sauce, you can keep it classic with mayo, mayo-mustard, or a spicy pepper sauce like the one McDonald's makes. For an elevated flavor, you can even make this McDonald's breakfast sauce.
Oh, and for a simplified version of their spicy sauce, you can combine mayonnaise, Frank's red hot (or another hot sauce), paprika, cayenne powder, and thinly sliced peppers. I like habanero peppers, but red bell pepper will work too if you don't want it to be crazy spicy.
How To Make McDonald's Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwiches
Again, you only need a few minutes to make the chicken fillets and assemble the sandwich. Oh, and this recipe makes 2 servings, but you can always double or triple the recipe for more.
You can also make extra chicken fillets to freeze and store for later! This will allow you to whip some of these McDonald's chicken sandwiches in minutes!
Anyway, let's stop wasting time and get into it!
Step 1: Make the Spicy Chicken Fillet
First, take your chicken breast and slice it into 2-3 inch fillets.
Next, make the egg wash by combining the egg with a ¼ cup of water.
In another bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper.
Then, to bread the chicken fillets, first coat each chicken breast piece in the flour mixture. Next, coat it in the egg wash and add it back into the flour mixture.
Once your chicken fillets are evenly coated, place them on a dish - or freezer bag - and chill in the freezer for 1 hour to set. Don't freeze them for longer, since they might end up too cold and won't fry up evenly.
Step 2: Fry the Chicken
Anyway, once your chicken fillets have chilled, bring 2 cups of cooking oil to 350°F (180ºC) on the stovetop.
Then, fry the breaded chicken patty until they're golden brown on every side and the internal temp reaches 165°F.
Once fried, transfer the chicken patty to a paper towel-lined plate to soak up any excess grease.
Step 3: Build Your Sandwich and Serve
So, now it's time to assemble the crispy chicken sandwiches.
Start with the bottom bun and spread a half serving of your sauce of choice on it. Then, add one spicy chicken fillet, some tomatoes, lettuce, and the rest of the sauce. Top that off with the other half of the bun and your sandwich is complete!
And, that's it!
You'll be diving into your deluxe crispy chicken sandwich before you know it.
How To Store McDonald's Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich
If you're making this recipe for yourself, you might have one sandwich left over.
So, if you do, and you're not able to finish your spicy crispy chicken sandwich, you can store the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days.
With that said, I recommend keeping the chicken patty separate from the toppings if you plan to have leftovers, as it will be easier to reheat the chicken.
Oh, and if you're making some extra crispy chicken to freeze for later use, you can freeze the crispy chicken for up to 3 months. Just place the chicken on a baking sheet and freeze for about an hour. Then, once the chicken is frozen, you can wrap each chicken patty in tin foil and store 'em in an airtight freezer-safe container - or freezer-safe bag - for up to 3 months.
How To Reheat Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwiches
To reheat your fried chicken fillets, simply place them in the oven set to 400°F (200ºC) and bake for 12-15 minutes.
Alternatively, you can reheat them in your air fryer set to 375°F (190ºC) for 10-12 minutes.
And if you're reheating the frozen chicken, let them thaw in the fridge overnight, or just add some cooking time to the instructions above.
