How to make loaded shrimp fries
Alright, so this seafood poutine may have a lot of components but isn’t hard to make at all. It’s done in about 30 minutes from start to finish, and everything stays nice and warm for serving.
With all that said, here’s how to make the best loaded shrimp and fries on planet earth!
Step 1: Make the Creamy Basil Parmesan Sauce
First things first, prep and slice your green onion and set 'em aside for later. And this is an optional step but it will give your shrimp fries a pop of color and flavor that really elevates the dish to restaurant-quality.
Anyway, with that done, heat the heavy cream in a saucepan over medium-low heat, bringing it to a simmer. You’ll want to reduce the cream by half, which will take approximately 15 minutes.
Once your cream has reduced, stir in the parmesan cheese, basil, salt, and pepper. Then, lower the heat to keep the sauce warm while you prepare your shrimp and fries.
Step 2: Cook the Fries and Shrimp
Next, set a deep pan over medium-high heat and bring your oil to 375°F (190°C). You can also use a deep fryer for this if you have one.
Then, deep fry your french fries for around 5 minutes or until crispy and golden brown. Now, remove them from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain.
Next, rinse and clean your shrimp, patting them dry with a paper towel, then season with Old Bay seasoning to taste.
Now, melt the butter in a frying pan over medium heat and add your seasoned shrimp to it. Then, cook the shrimp, stirring often to prevent burning the spices, until the shrimp is opaque and pink - about 5 minutes.
Step 3: Bake and Serve
After the shrimp have cooked, divide the french fries into two 18.6 oz baking dishes, or something similar in size.
Sprinkle the shrimp on top, followed by the warm creamy cheese sauce and more shredded parmesan cheese on top.
Bake in an oven preheated to 375°F (190°C) for 10 minutes or until the cheese has melted. Garnish with your chopped green onion and enjoy!
Optional Tips
The versatility of this loaded shrimp fries recipe is why I keep coming back to it again and again.
Change it up by adding garlic, cayenne, or your favorite spice alongside your Old Bay seasoning. Or, add some zing with a squeeze of fresh lemon.
You can even drizzle this ranch dressing on top to make the flavors even better.
How to Store Shrimp Fries
As you know, this shrimp fries recipe will make two casserole dishes worth. But if you only want one seafood poutine, just cut this recipe in half.
Now, these loaded shrimp and fries are best eaten immediately since they’ll lose a lot of their crispiness when refrigerated.
But if you do choose to store them, you can transfer the seafood poutine into an airtight container and keep it in the fridge for about 1-2 days.
Then if you want to reheat the meal, you can reheat it in a baking dish in the oven at 350°F (175°C) until warmed through.
FAQs About This Shrimp Fries Recipe
Can I use frozen shrimp?
Yes! You can use frozen shrimp for this recipe. I actually prefer to use frozen shrimp for any shrimp recipes. Frozen shrimp actually tends to be fresher than fresh shrimp believe it or not. Fresh shrimp loses its freshness by the day if it's sitting out on the ice. So I recommend using frozen shrimp, and if you do, here are a few ways to thaw it.
Does this recipe work with fish sticks or other seafood?
Yes, this recipe does work with fish sticks. You can replace the french fries with fish sticks for the ultimate seafood poutine. And you can definitely use other seafood or proteins for this recipe too. If you want, you can use chicken instead of the shrimp and have a chicken and fries poutine.
