The Best Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole

If you love chicken cordon bleu, just wait until you try this warm, hearty casserole version of it. Honestly, you'll probably love it even more than traditional chicken cordon bleu. For what it's worth, it's one of my all-time favorite dinner casserole recipes - and that's really saying something because I've made a bunch of them over the past couple of months.

One of the things I love most about this chicken cordon bleu casserole recipe is that it has something for everyone. If you love meat, it's got a ton of it. If you love pasta, this casserole has plenty of it. And if you love recipes with a ton of melty, yummy, cheesy deliciousness it has a bunch of that too.

The casserole consists of chunks of juicy rotisserie chicken, savory pieces of diced ham, a creamy garlicky sauce, perfectly cooked pasta noodles, and loads of melty, yummy swiss cheese. Then everything gets topped with some panko bread crumbs and baked to golden brown perfection.

    Sounds pretty delicious, right?

Honestly though, the best part about this chicken casserole isn't how tasty it is, it's how easy it is to make! Again, less than a handful of steps, and 10 minutes of prep time work are all you'll need to invest to make this casserole.

By the way, while this chicken cordon bleu casserole is delicious on its own it's even better with some sides. A few of my favorites to pair with it are these honey glazed carrots, this cornbread, and these green beans.

    Ingredients

The ingredient list for this chicken cordon bleu casserole is super simple. In fact, I can almost guarantee you have most - if not all - of them in your kitchen already.

Anyway, here's everything you'll need to make this casserole:

    • 2 cups dry pasta of your choice (I used shells)
    • ¼ cup butter
    • 1 garlic clove, minced
    • 1 cup heavy cream
    • 1 tbsp. flour
    • salt and pepper
    • 1 ½ lbs. rotisserie chicken, shredded
    • 3 cups cup shredded Swiss cheese
    • 1 cup ham, diced
    • ½ cup panko bread crumbs

    Simple stuff, right?

By the way, if you have any leftover ham, you can use it to make this cheesy ham and potato casserole!

An assortment of ingredients for chicken cordon bleu casserole including bowls of shredded cheese, shredded chicken, uncooked pasta, bread crumbs, diced ham, butter and spices.

    Ingredient Substitutions And Suggestions

Now, I think this chicken cordon bleu casserole recipe tastes perfect when made with the exact ingredients above. But, with that said, there's definitely some wiggle room to modify the ingredients and possibly save you a trip to the store.

For instance, if you don't have all of the ingredients to make your creamy sauce, you can swap the cream and flour for cream of chicken soup, as this will have the same creamy texture and thickened consistency you'd get from making the sauce from scratch.

As far as the chicken goes, this recipe calls for rotisserie chicken, which is a huge time-saver. That being said, any cooked and shredded chicken will work. You can even use chicken chunks, but I think shredded chicken works best.

For the pasta, I always use pasta shells - or elbows - since I think smaller pasta noodles work best, but again, you can use anything you want!

Lastly, this recipe calls for shredded Swiss cheese, as this is the cheese used in traditional chicken cordon bleu dishes. However, you can really use any cheese that you want. Some other great options are cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, or really any shredded cheese. You can even add a little parmesan cheese on top for extra flavor.

How To Make Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole

As I mentioned earlier, making this chicken cordon bleu casserole recipe couldn't be easier.

Basically, you just cook the pasta, combine all of the ingredients together, transfer them to your casserole dish, and bake! The oven really does all of the hard work, so once you're done prepping, you can kick back and relax until dinner's ready.

Anyway, let's stop wasting time and make this easy casserole recipe!

Black skillet with a thickened cream sauce simmering in the skillet.

    Step 1: Prep Work

First things first, you'll want to preheat your oven to 350°F (180ºC) and then you'll want to grease a small casserole dish with cooking spray or butter.

Then, you can cook the pasta of your choice according to the package instructions. Again, I used pasta shells, but can use any kind of pasta to make it. Anyway, while the pasta is cooking, you'll want to make the sauce.

    Step 2: Make The Sauce

    Now, onto the creamy sauce.

So, the first thing you'll want to do to make it is heat a skillet to medium-high heat. Then, as the skillet is heating up you can and add the butter and garlic to it and let them cook together for about 1 minute - just until the butter has melted and the garlic is fragrant.

Now, once the aromatics of the garlic start to fill the air, you can add the flour, heavy cream, salt, and black pepper to the skillet and continue cooking everything for a couple of minutes. Just make sure to stir the sauce mixture frequently and cook until it thickens.

    Step 3: Combine The Filling

Now that the sauce is ready to go we're going to focus on the filling.

So, to make the filling for this chicken cordon bleu casserole the first thing you'll want to do is take out a large bowl and add the sauce you just prepared to it. Then, you'll want to add the shredded chicken, two cups of the swiss cheese, and the diced ham. Just give all of the ingredients a good mix until they're thoroughly combined.

    Step 4: Bake The Casserole

Once the filling is combined and good to go, you can transfer the chicken mixture to the prepared baking dish and top it with the rest of the swiss cheese and the panko bread crumbs.

Then, put the baking dish in the oven and bake your casserole for about 15-20 minutes - or until it is golden brown on top. Finally, serve it warm and enjoy!

How To Store Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole

This recipe for chicken cordon bleu casserole makes around 4-6 large servings. So, it's the perfect casserole dish to feed a big hungry family. And, if you're lucky, there might even be some leftovers!

Speaking of leftovers, if you end up with some extras of this chicken cordon bleu casserole you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. With that said though, the amount of time you can store it will depend on how many days old the rotisserie chicken is. Cooked chicken will only stay good for up 4 days. So make sure you take into consideration when you're figuring out how long you should keep your leftovers for.

Alternatively, if you want your leftovers to last even longer, just let them cool completely, and then you can store them in a freezer-safe container for up to 6 months.

How To Reheat Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole

When you're ready to dive into this chicken cordon bleu casserole again, you'll definitely want to enjoy it hot.

With that said, to reheat your casserole, I recommend putting your leftovers back in a casserole dish - or baking dish - and reheating them in an oven at 350°F for about 10-12 minutes.

Alternatively, if you're just looking to reheat a single serving, you can microwave your leftovers in 30-second increments until they're fully warmed. Usually it takes less than 2 minutes for this to happen in my microwave.

Honestly, chicken casserole recipes don't get any better than this one. From the creamy flavor-filled sauce to the noodles, chicken, ham, swiss cheese and crunchy panko bread crumbs, it's just filled with so, so much deliciousness.

My family can't get enough of this casserole, and I have a feeling your family will love it too!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this chicken cordon bleu casserole recipe as much as I/we do.
