The Best Panda Express Black Pepper Angus Steak

The black pepper angus steak is one of the staples at Panda Express. And, honestly, it's probably one of the tastiest steaks dishes that you can get from a fast-food place.

    Atleast I think it is.

Plus, it's so easy that you'll want to make it a staple meal for the week.

And, not only is it delicious, but it's pretty healthy too since it's mainly protein and veggies with one of the most delicious sauces you'll find in a stir fry style recipe.

Also, since it's a stir fry recipe, everything cooks in just one pan. This means not only is this steak recipe incredibly easy to make, but clean-up is a breeze too.

Oh, and it's worth mentioning that this Panda Express black pepper angus steak copycat recipe is one that you can easily double or triple. So, if you need to make more than the 3 servings this recipe makes, you easily can.

By the way, if you like Panda Express, you have to make this honey sesame chicken or honey walnut shrimp next! Like this angus steak, they taste pretty much identical to the one from the restaurant.

    Ingredients

So, you'll need just a few simple ingredients to create this dish, and you honestly probably have most of them in your pantry already.

Aside from the marination time, you'll have an incredibly flavorful meal ready in about 30 minutes!

Anyways, here's a list of everything you'll need:

    • Angus sirloin steak- 12 oz (diced into 1" strips)
    • 1 tbsp. cornstarch
    • 4 tbsp. soy sauce
    • 2 tbsp. sesame seed oil
    • 1 tsp. garlic (minced)
    • 1 small white onion (cut & sliced into 1" pieces)
    • Asparagus - 12 oz (a bunch, sliced into 1" pieces)
    • 1 ½ cups white mushrooms (Sliced)
    • ½ cup Chinese rice wine
    • 1 tbsp. sweet soy sauce (also called kecap manis)
    • 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
    • ½ tsp. black pepper

That's all that's standing in your way of having an exquisite dinner entree that is an all-around crowd-pleaser.

By the way, this recipe is easily elevated with a side of rice so I highly recommend making some to go along with it. This sushi rice, coconut rice, or even egg fried rice pair perfectly.

Oh, and if you like sirloin steak recipes, you have to try making these steak kabobs in the oven next.

How to Make Black Pepper Angus Steak

As I eluded to, this Panda Express black pepper angus steak is easy to make in just one pan - or wok. And the result is one of the tastiest copycat recipes you'll find.

So, let's not waste any more time and jump right into this recipe.

Another help you with the square dish containing steak cutlets. They have just been seasoned and are marinating in soy sauce.

    Step 1: Prep Work

Ok, to begin, combine the cornstarch and the 1 tablespoon portion of soy sauce in a medium bowl. Then, add the sliced angus sirloin steak to the bowl, and stir to coat the steak in the cornstarch mixture.

Now, set the mixture aside, and let the steak marinate for at least 1 hour - the longer you let it marinate, the more flavor the steak will have.

Next, add the remaining portion of the soy sauce, rice wine and Worcestershire sauce to a small bowl and set aside for later.

    Step 3: Cooking the Veggies

When the steak is almost done marinating, heat a large skillet or wok over high heat.

Once heated, add the sesame seed oil to it and wait for it to start smoking slightly.

Then, add the garlic and onion and stir fry for 1-2 minutes until the onion begins to turn translucent.

Next, add the sliced mushrooms to the onion and garlic mixture and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.

Step 4: Cooking The Steak & Adding The Sauce

Now add the marinated steak and cook for about 4-5 minutes until it's browned and there's no longer any pink.

After the steak is cooked, add the asparagus and the Chinese rice wine and cook for 1 minute. Then, add the mixed sauce ingredients that you set aside earlier - the soy sauce, rice wine, and Worcestershire sauce -  and the black pepper.

Cook everything in the wok for about 3-4 minutes, or until the asparagus has reached your desired level of tenderness and the sauce has thickened to your preference. And you can cover the wok if you want your Shanghai angus steak to be nice and saucy.

Anyway, once the stir fry is cooked to perfection, give everything a mix to coat it in the sauce, serve with a side of rice, and enjoy!

How to Store Panda Express Black Pepper Angus Steak

As I mentioned earlier, this Panda Express black pepper angus steak will make about 3 servings. And you can definitely double or triple the recipe since it stores so well.

You can keep any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.

How to Reheat Black Pepper Angus Steak

If you want to reheat the leftovers, the best is to put everything back in a large pan - or wok - on the stovetop over medium heat.

You'll want to heat it for about 3-5 minutes - or until it reaches your desired temperature - frequently stirring until the sauce and steak reach your desired temperature. And if the sauce is too thick, and you want to thin it out a bit, feel free to add about a tablespoon of water at a time until it thins.

This is a great base from which to jump off. Thanks much for identifying kecap manis as the secret ingredient. I made a batch, and I expect I'll explore other Indonesian recipes that use it.

There was not, however, nearly enough of the sauce for my liking, so I doubled the sauce recipe. Also, I added 1/2 inch each of grated ginger and lemongrass to make the sauce flavor more complex. Because I had so much more sauce, I increased the amount of meat to a full pound.
