How To Make Shipwreck Casserole
1. Prepare work: Preheat the oven to 350°F (180ºC). Grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish or something similar in size with nonstick cooking spray.
2. Cook the beef: In a non-stick skillet, heat a bit of oil over medium-high heat. Add the raw ground beef, diced onion, and garlic to the hot skillet. Cook the beef, stirring frequently, until it's browned on all sides. Add the chili powder, oregano, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper, and mix everything together.
3. Build the casserole: First, add a layer of sliced potatoes to the prepared casserole dish. Top it with half of the cooked ground beef, kidney beans, cooked bacon, and tomato soup or crushed tomatoes. Repeat the same layers starting with the sliced potatoes.
4. Bake and serve: Finish the casserole with more sliced potatoes and bake it for 1 hour or until potatoes are golden and fork-tender. Top the cooked potatoes with the crushed Corn Flakes and shredded cheese. Bake for 10 more minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown. Serve warm, and enjoy!
Tips To Make The Best Recipe
- The potatoes can overlap slightly when layering the casserole but stack them on top of one another.
- Try other ground meat like ground turkey or ground chicken instead of ground beef.
- Use a mandoline slicer to make it easier to slice the potatoes.
- Use canned chili instead of all of the beef mixture ingredients to save prep time.
- Add a layer of long-grain rice or any instant rice to make this casserole even heartier.
- Serve the casserole with sour cream, grated cheese, hot sauce, or any other of your favorite toppings.
How To Store Shipwreck Casserole
In the fridge: Store the leftover shipwreck casserole in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
In the freezer: Transfer the casserole to a freezer-safe container or bag and freeze for up to 3 months.
Reheating: Put the casserole back in a baking dish and warm it in the oven at 350°F for about 10 minutes or until it reaches your desired temperature. Let the frozen casserole thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.

Hi Deb! I think that would work well I love sweet potatoes in anything
Jennifer

Brendan Cunningham
Yes definitely!

Can you use slouched canned potatoes?

Hi Meg! Yes those should work great, just drain any liquid from the can before adding the potatoes.

Any suggestions on what would be a good substitute for the corn flakes on top? Otherwise, this recipe sounds delicious!
Brendan Cunningham
Hi Cindy! Crushed Ritz crackers would work great. Mix the crackers with a tablespoon or two of melted butter before topping the casserole with them for the best flavor.
Carol
Can I half this? Am on my own now and 9x13 pan is just too much
Thanks
Brendan Cunningham
Hi Carol, yes definitely!
Benjamin
I made cornbread (with garlic butter in the mix) crumbled it and topped with that instead of cornflakes. Also used sweet potatoes. It was delicious
Carrie
Maybe substitute a cream of potato soup or a cheese soup for the tomato soup and add other veggies instead of tomato.
Benjamin
I used sweet potatoes instead of russet and topped it off with garlic cornbread and cheese instead of the cornflakes. It was delicious. Thanks. Great recipe.
