The Best Wor Wonton Soup Recipe
Chinese restaurants always have the best wor wonton soup, and this recipe creates that authentic soup experience in the comfort of your own home!
Honestly, it might be even better than the wonton soup you'd get from a restaurant.
This homemade wor wonton soup has a simple broth that is bursting with flavor in each bite. The broth is seriously so good on its own, but it's made even better with the addition of pork ribs, chicken, and vegetables. Not to mention, it's just so easy to make. In fact, you can make this soup in just 30 minutes, and almost the entire time is passive cooking!
Seriously, you basically just add all of the ingredients to a pot and then let them cook. How simple does that sound?
By the way, while you're waiting for everything to cook, you can make a super tasty side dish to pair with it. My favorite thing to make with it is this moo shu pork or potato mochi.
Ingredients
Another thing I love about this wor wonton soup recipe is that it's made entirely with simple ingredients. In fact, I've got a feeling you've got most - if not all - of them at your house already.
Anyway, here's what you'll need to make this war wonton soup recipe:
- 2 tbsp. sesame oil
- 2 cups pork ribs, cubed
- 1 chicken breast, boneless and skinless
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 2 tbsp. soy sauce
- 6 cups chicken broth
- 12 frozen wontons or gyozas
- ⅓ cup carrot, thinly sliced
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 1 cup greens (baby bok choy, broccoli, celery)
- salt and pepper
Simple stuff, right?
By the way, you can use a lot of these same ingredients to make this beef ramen as well. So, I definitely recommend giving that a try sometimes too!
Oh, and if you have extra wontons, you can use them to make this crab rangoon next!
Ingredient Substitutions And Suggestions
Now, I always make this wor wonton soup recipe with the ingredients listed above, but you can certainly make some changes if you'd like.
First off, I like to use frozen wontons - or gyozas - to make this recipe as simple as possible, but you can also make homemade wontons.
As for some additions to the broth, some other things I like to add from time to time are bok choy, snow peas, green onions, ground turkey, shrimp, carrots, and/or ginger.
Now, as far as the broth goes, I like to use chicken stock because I like the flavor, but vegetable broth will work great to make this wonton soup with too!
How To Make Wor Wonton Soup
Now it's time for the best part, making the soup!
As I said earlier, this homemade wor wonton soup recipe is super quick and super easy to make. In fact, you'll have to invest less than 30 minutes of your time to make it, and it all comes together in only 4 simple steps.
Anyway, let's not waste another second and jump right into the recipe!
Step 1: Cooking The Pork
First things first, you'll want to take out a large pot, add some oil to it - I use sesame oil - and put it over medium-high heat. Then, once the olive oil is hot you can add the raw pork ribs to it.
Now, once you got the ribs in the pot you'll want to season them with some salt and pepper and cook 'em on all sides for a few minutes until they're nice and browned.
Step 2: Add The Chicken and Broth
So, now that the pork is slightly cooked, you can add the chicken breast, chicken broth, minced garlic, and soy sauce to the pot and bring everything to a boil.
Then, after you get the soup boiling you can turn the heat down to medium and let it cook for about 20-25 minutes - or until the chicken is cooked and can easily be shredded with a fork.
Step 3: Completing The soup
Once the chicken is good to go, you can remove the cooked chicken from the soup base and shred it with two forks. Also, if you want, you can cut the pork into any-sized slices that you prefer at this point too.
Then, once you've got the meat looking good, you can add the wontons to the broth along with the mushrooms and let everything cook for a few more minutes until the wontons are tender.
Finally, you can scoop a ladle of soup from your hot pot into a serving bowl and top it with some carrots, greens, and anything else that you want. Serve it immediately and enjoy!
How To Store Wor Wonton Soup
This recipe for wor wonton soup will make about 4 servings, so it's the perfect dinner for two because it's almost impossible to have just one bowl of it.
Seriously, you'll be craving more with each slurp, and I typically never have any leftovers.
But with that said, if you do happen to have some soup left over, you can store it in an airtight container. Stored this way, the soup will last in the refrigerator for about 3-4 days.
Wrapping It Up
Well, that's how to make wor wonton soup in just 30 minutes!
