How To Make Peanut Butter Balls
So, as you know by now, this simple peanut butter balls recipe is really easy to make!
Honestly, no bake recipes don't get any easier than this one. The only "cooking" here is melting the chocolate in the microwave, then you just have to mix and dip. Yup, that's all you have to do!
By the way, this recipe makes about 6 Reese's peanut butter cups balls, so you can easily double - or triple - the recipe to make more if you're serving these at a holiday party.
Anyway, now let's get into the steps for this recipe!
Step 1: Make the Peanut Butter Filling
First, combine the peanut butter, salted butter, and powdered sugar (confectioners sugar) in a bowl.
Then, use a rubber spatula - or wooden spoon - and mix everything together until a thick dough forms. Once the dough takes shape use your hands to form about 6 evenly-sized peanut butter balls out of the smooth peanut butter mixture.
Step 2: Making the Chocolate Coating
Once your peanut butter balls are good to go, you can get started on the chocolate.
First, add the semi sweet chocolate chips (or dark chocolate chips) to a small microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 20-second increments until fully melted. Oh, and if you're using melting chocolate, add them to the bowl at this time.
After every increment, stir the chocolate with a rubber spatula - or spoon - to make sure everything you can melt chocolate chips evenly.
Step 3: Coat the Peanut Butter Balls
Lastly, dip each one of the peanut butter balls into the melted chocolate and coat them completely in the chocolate.
Scoop them out with a spoon and place them back on the baking sheet lined with parchment paper to set for a few minutes and let the excess chocolate drip off. I like to pop them in the freezer at this point to get them to set as fast as possible.
Then, once the chocolate has hardened, serve and enjoy!
Storage Instructions
So, this recipe for peanut butter balls will make 6 peanut butter balls, but you can really as many as you want. Everyone always eats them up in a flash, so I definitely recommend doubling, tripling, or quadrupling this recipe!
Also, they keep really well. So, if you have leftovers, you can store them in either the fridge or freezer to enjoy 'em in the following day's/months.
With that said, to store them in the fridge, just put the peanut butter balls in an airtight container and they'll stay good for up to 2-3 weeks.
You can also freeze these Reese's peanut butter cups balls in a freezer-safe container - or bag - for up to 6 months. The best way to freeze them is on a parchment paper lined baking tray first, then transfer them to the container/bag for storing.
Then, before eating the frozen peanut butter balls, you'll want to thaw them in the refrigerator overnight - or at room temperature for a few minutes - to soften them up.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are peanut butter balls made of?
Peanut butter balls are typically made of peanut butter, salted butter, and powdered sugar. Those ingredients are then combined and rolled into a ball form, chilled to set, and usually - but not always - coated with chocolate.
With that said, other peanut butter ball recipes use rice Krispies - or other crushed cereal - to make the base. But, those same recipes are pretty much always either completely - or partially - covered in chocolate.
Do peanut butter balls need to be refrigerated?
It's important to refrigerate peanut butter balls because the peanut butter in the filling tends to soften at room temperature. Refrigerating them helps keep their form and texture, and I think they just taste better chilled too!
What do I do if my peanut butter balls are sticky?
If your peanut butter balls are too sticky even if you let them set in the fridge - or freezer - you might want to add more powdered sugar to the mix and chill again.
Can you freeze peanut butter balls?
Yes, you can! Peanut butter balls can last several months in a freezer in a freezer-safe airtight container. I like to make 'em in early December and then have them on hand for the holiday season! Also, for what it's worth, you can actually eat them right out of the freezer. So, if you're impatient like me, you don't even have to let them thaw.
