My Take On Mini Apple Pies
It's safe to say I have a bit of an obsession with apple recipes, like these apple pie bars and apple dump cake, but lately, I've been all about these mini apple pies.
They are so simple yet full of flavor. I start this recipe off by tossing fresh apple slices in a combination of sugar and warming spices. Then they're layered between two sheets of flaky pie crust and baked to golden brown perfection.
Doesn't that sound delicious?!
I'll be honest, as much as I love a classic apple pie recipe, I might like these even more. There's just something about a single-serve dessert you can eat with your hands that's so satisfying.
Anyway, not only are they just as flavorful, but they're so much easier to make than regular apple pie! So this is the perfect thing to make if you're craving pie but don't want an involved process.
Why You'll Love This Recipe
6 ingredients. Yes, that's right, you'll only need 6 ingredients to make these delicious mini apple hand pies, and I typically have a lot of them on hand. So hopefully, you do too!
Tons of Fall flavor. These pies have all the classic flavors of fall, with warm brown sugar, cinnamon, and tender apples. So if you're looking for a fall treat, this recipe is for you!
A family favorite. These apple hand pies have all the elements of a dessert that everyone loves. My nieces go crazy for them, so they're totally kid-approved.
Ingredients
- Pie crusts- you'll need two. Homemade or store-bought works great.
- Apples- your favorite kind!
- Brown sugar- for that sweet flavor.
- Cinnamon and nutmeg- for the warm spices.
- Egg- to get the golden brown crust.
How To Make Apple Hand Pies
1. Cut the mini pie crusts: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the refrigerated pie crust. Cut out the dough into 6 four-inch circles. Repeat with the second pie dough.
2. Prep work: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a small bowl, combine the chopped apples, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg to make the apple pie filling.
3. Fill the pies: Place the dough circles on the prepared baking sheet. Add 1 tablespoon of the apple mixture to one side of the dough circle. Whisk the egg in a small bowl and brush the egg wash around the edge of the dough. Fold over one side of the dough and seal the edges with a fork. Repeat this with the remaining dough circles.
4. Bake and serve: Brush the pies with the remaining egg wash. Bake the pies for 15-20 minutes until they are golden brown. Let the pies cool in the pan for 5 minutes, and then transfer them to a wire rack to finish cooling. Then, serve warm and enjoy!
My Tips To Make The Best Recipe
- Add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice to make slightly tart apple pies.
- Some of my favorite apples to use in mini apple pies are Granny Smith apples, Honey Crisp, Pink Lady, or Braeburn apples.
- Sprinkle a mix of granulated sugar and cinnamon on top of the hand pies before baking for a little extra sweetness.
- Serve the pies with vanilla ice cream and fresh whipped cream for the best dessert ever.
How I Recommend Storing and Reheating Leftovers
At room temperature: Store any leftovers in an airtight container or ziploc bag with the excess air squeezed out on the kitchen counter for up to 2 days.
In the fridge: To keep a little longer, transfer to the fridge and store for up to 4 days.
In the freezer: If you want to make them ahead of time to keep on hand for a later date, store them in a freezer-safe container for up to 6 months.
Reheating: I like to put the leftovers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake them at 350°F for 5-8 minutes or until the filling is warm. For frozen pies, add extra baking time. I don't suggest microwaving the pies, as they'll be soggy and not crispy.
