What Shrimp Are Best To Make Shrimp Burgers With
When picking out your shrimp, look for wild-caught shrimp.
Wild-caught shrimp have a cleaner, sharper, and more true shrimp flavor. Farm-raised shrimp simply aren't as tasty to eat.
Now, you may be wondering if you can use fresh and frozen shrimp for this recipe, and the short answer is you can use both.
However, here are a few things to keep in mind...
Fresh shrimp are typically stacked on ice in the grocery store and have already gone through the freezing and thawing process, which means that they are losing their freshness by the hour.
Can You Use Frozen Shrimp
Unless you're going to use the shrimp you buy that day, I suggest buying frozen shrimp. Frozen shrimp has an overall better taste, cooks better, and has a better texture.
Having said that, if you have frozen shrimp, you will need to make sure that it is thawed correctly before turning it into burgers.
And thawing frozen shrimp is easy.
First, fill a large bowl with cold water. Then, remove the shrimp from the packaging, seal them in a Ziploc bag, and place the bag in the bowl of cold water.
Now, after you've added the shrimp to the bowl, you'll want to let them sit like this for 10-20 minutes - or until they are fully thawed. Then, once they're defrosted, place the shrimp on a plate lined with paper towels and pat them dry.
Prepping your shrimp for these burgers is as simple as that!
Ingredients/Substitutions To Make These Burgers Keto Friendly
Traditionally, a burger is eaten on a bun.
But, if you're following a keto diet, buns aren't in the picture.
Don't worry though, there are various low carb bun options to buy like these Franz Buns, and many bread recipes to make like this keto bread.
That said, my favorite way to eat these burgers without all the carbs is to use lettuce as the bun.
And the best lettuce that you can use is romaine, iceberg, or butterhead lettuce. Simply take two pieces of lettuce and put them on the top and bottom of your shrimp burger.
Now, this recipe also uses breadcrumbs to help form the shrimp into patties. And since breadcrumbs contain a high amount of carbs, you'll want to substitute these out as well.
Having said that, the best substitute for the breadcrumbs in this recipe is going to be super fine almond flour. The almond four will help bind the ingredients together to form the patties just like breadcrumbs do.
However, you'll want to use a little less almond flour when making your shrimp burgers - a little less than ⅓ of a cup is all you'll need.
How To Make Shrimp Burgers
Ok, now that we have what we need, let's turn our shrimp into flavorful burgers!
And, as I mentioned before, it's incredibly easy to make these shrimp burgers - just 4 steps is all you have to follow to make them!
Step 1: Prep
Ok, so the prep work for these shrimp burgers is pretty minimal.
First, make sure your shrimp is thawed, peeled, and deveined.
Then, you'll want to combine the paprika, parsley, chili powder, and breadcrumbs in a small bowl, and set it aside.
Step 2: Making The Patties
Now, once you've done the prep work, you'll want to put your shrimp into a food processor along with the garlic, onion, and parsley. Pulse everything together until it forms a thick, slightly chunky paste.
Then, remove the paste from the food processor and put it into a large bowl. Next, pour the breadcrumb and spice mixture into the bowl, and mix everything with a spatula until well combined.
Now, once everything is combined, divide the mixture into four individual patties that weigh roughly a quarter of a pound each.
Then, flatten the patties into your desired thickness and form them to make a round shape.
Step 3: Frying The Burgers
Ok, now you'll want to heat a skillet - or non-stick frying pan - with 1-2 tablespoons of oil to keep the patties from sticking.
Then, when you've got the oil hot, cook the shrimp burgers for around 3-4 minutes on each side until they turn golden brown.
The golden brown color will ensure the patties are crispy along the edges to give them a slight crunch as you bite into them.
Step 4: Adding The Toppings
Now, once the burgers are cooked, put them on a hamburger bun or lettuce bun of your choice.
Then, add any toppings you'd like. And there are endless ways to jazz up your shrimp burger, from tomato and avocado to mayo and tartar sauce!
However you decide to eat your burger, it will be delicious. Enjoy!
Storing Your Shrimp Burgers
These burgers are great to make as meal prep for the week, or to have on hand for a quick lunch or dinner when you don't feel like cooking.
And they'lll stay good for up to a week store in an air-tight container in the fridge. Then, to reheat them, all you have to do is warm them up in a skillet over medium heat.
That said, you can also make a larger quantity of this recipe and keep these shrimp burgers ready to go in your freezer. They can be stored in the freezer in an airtight container - or freezer-safe bag - for up to 6 months!
And again, to reheat them when they're frozen, just warm the burgers up in a skillet over medium heat until they defrost and reach your desired temperature.
