The Best Bang Bang Shrimp Recipe

If you're in the mood for some delicious breaded panko shrimp, then you've come to the right place. This bang bang shrimp - also known as boom boom shrimp - is by far one of my most favorite shrimp recipes.

I just love how crispy the shrimp are from the panko breadcrumbs, and the combination of the sauce makes them downright irresistible.

There's no question as to why it is such a popular dish at seafood restaurants. I mean, it makes an excellent appetizer to share, or, you can enjoy it as a main course, and eat it for dinner.

But if you are looking for a complete shrimp meal for lunch or dinner, definitely check out this shrimp lo mein recipe.

    Why This Recipe Works

Restaurant-quality. This bang bang shrimp tastes just as good, if not better than what you'd get from a restaurant. It tastes just like the bang bang shrimp from Bonefish Grill.

Cooks fast. After you bread the shrimp, you can fry it to perfection in under 5 minutes!

Crowd-pleaser. I haven't met anyone who doesn't love this recipe. Every time I've served this crispy shrimp, it's a hit!

    Ingredients

There are two parts to making this bang bang shrimp recipe, and that's making the shrimp and the creamy sauce.

That said, here's what you'll need to make the shrimp:

    • ½ cup vegetable oil, or more for frying
    • 1 large egg
    • Salt and black pepper, to taste
    • ½ cup cornstarch
    • ½ cup chickpea (garbanzo bean) flour or substitute with more cornstarch
    • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
    • ½ teaspoon onion powder
    • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
    • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1 pound medium shrimp, peeled and deveined

And, for the creamy Thai sweet chili sauce, you'll need:

    • ¼ cup Greek yogurt (or mayonnaise)
    • 2 tablespoons sweet chili sauce
    • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
    • Hot sauce to taste

A blue bowl filled with bang bang shrimp, with a big leaf of lettuce on the rim of the right half of the bowl. A glass jar of bang bag sauce is on a wooden cutting board to the back left of the bowl. Everything is on a white table cloth that is on a white counter.

How To Make Bang Bang Shrimp

    1. Make the Thai sweet chili sauce: Whisk together the Greek yogurt, sweet chili sauce, rice vinegar, and hot sauce in a bowl until combined and creamy. Set aside.

    2. Prepare the breading stations: In one bowl, whisk the egg with salt and pepper. In another bowl, mix the chickpea flour and cornstarch until well combined. In a third bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs, onion powder, garlic powder, and oregano.

    3. Bread the shrimp: Working with a few shrimp at a time, cover them in the cornstarch and chickpea flour mixture. Drop the shrimp into the whisked egg, and coat them entirely in it. Put the shrimp in the panko mixture, thoroughly coating the shrimp on all sides.

    4. Fry the shrimp: Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp to the hot skillet and fry for about 1-3 minutes on each side until golden and crispy.

    5. Serve: Transfer the fried shrimp to a paper towel-lined plate to soak up any excess oil.  Serve with the hot chili sauce for dipping, and enjoy!

Tips To Make The Best Recipe

    • Make sure the oil is hot before frying the shrimp.
    • Cook the shrimp in batches so the oil temperature stays hot for extra crunchy shrimp.
    • Lightly press the shrimp in the panko breadcrumbs so it sticks.
    • Toss the shrimp in a bowl with the Thai chili sauce before serving.
    • Add red pepper flakes to the spicy mayo sauce to make it even spicier.

How To Store Bang Bang Shrimp

In the fridge: Store the cooked shrimp in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

In the freezer: Transfer all the shrimp to a freezer-safe bag and freeze for about 10 months.

Reheating: Warm the crispy bang bang shrimp in the oven at 350°F for about 10 minutes or until it reaches your desired temperature. You can also put it in the air fryer for a few minutes at 400°F. Just add more time for the frozen shrimp.
