    The Best Flat Iron Steak

I'll be honest, flat iron steak might just be my favorite cut of beef. When it's cooked and seasoned the right way, the steak turns out perfectly tender and juicy and so, so flavorful.

The cooking process for flat iron steak is also super straightforward. In fact, I'd go as far as saying it's almost an effortless process. You just have to mix the seasonings together, rub them into the steak, and then cook it for about 10 minutes - until it reaches 130°F.

The result is a restaurant-worthy steak that everyone will be impressed with. How great does that sound?! Well, just wait until you see how good this steak tastes.

By the way, since the steak is so easy to make, you can whip up some equally delicious sides to go with it. When I cook flat iron steaks I love serving them with these Texas Roadhouse rolls and these cheesy mashed potatoes. But honestly, you can't go wrong with any side you choose!

    Ingredients

As I mentioned earlier, the ingredients needed to make these flat iron steaks are super simple. In fact, I can almost guarantee you have all of them at home already.

Anyway, here's what you'll need to make 'em:

    • ½ tbsp salt
    • ½ tbsp Italian seasoning
    • ¼ tsp garlic powder
    • ¼ tsp onion powder
    • Black pepper, to taste
    • ¾-1 lb. flat iron steak
    • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

    Pretty simple stuff, right?

By the way, I use all of these seasonings to make this Little Caesars Italian cheese bread recipe, so you can totally whip that up as a side too!

    Ingredient Substitutions And Suggestions

While I think this flat iron steak recipe turns out best when made with the ingredients listed above, there's definitely room to switch up some of the ingredients to suit your preferences and also possibly save you a trip to the store.

First off, this recipe calls for a dry rub of seasonings, but you could also make a delicious marinade instead to infuse even more flavor into the steaks. I recommend keeping it simple with just soy sauce, a little Worcestershire sauce, and some garlic or fresh herbs.

Also, if you don't have/can't find flat iron steak - but you still want to give this recipe a go - you can swap it for something similar such as flank steak or skirt steak. I recommend using flank steak in this recipe since it is similar in thickness and also turns out juicy and tender when prepared in a hot skillet.

How To Cook Flat Iron Steak

As I mentioned before, this recipe couldn't be any easier to make. It'll take you no more than 15 minutes to bring it all together, and almost all of that time is spent letting the steak cook.

Anyway, let's stop wasting time and get cooking.

Two raw seasoned flat iron steaks on a wood cutting board.

Step 1: Make The Spice Mix

First things first, you're going to make the spice blend to coat the steak in.

So, to do that, you can take out a small bowl and combine the salt, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Just make sure to mix everything up well before you rub the mixture into your flat iron steaks.

Step 2A: Cook The  Steaks In A Pan

Now that the steaks are ready to go, you can take out a large skillet, cast iron pan, or grill pan and melt the butter in it over medium heat. I like to use a cast iron pan because I think the steak turns out best that way, but anything will work great.

Anyway, once the surface of the pan is hot and the butter has melted, you can add in the flat iron steak and cook it for about 5-6 minutes on each side - internally, you'd like it to be 130°F for a medium rare steak. If you like your steak more well-done, then you can cook it for an additional 1-2 minutes on both sides - or until it reaches closer to 150°F.

Now, just so you know, since flat iron steak is a leaner cut of meat, it'll be best enjoyed at a cook temp of no more than medium rare. The reason being is that it will become chewier and tougher the longer you let it cook - since it's devoid of a lot of fat.

Step 2B: Make Grilled Flat Iron Steak

If you'd prefer to make grilled flat iron steak, then set your grill to medium-high heat and lightly oil the grates with olive oil or cooking spray. Then you can add your seasoned steaks to the grill once it's heated.

Next, you'll want to grill the flat iron steaks for around 5 minutes per side or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Again, if you want your grilled steaks more well-done, just cook 'em for an additional minute or so on each side.

Step 3: Rest, Slice, And Serve

Once the steaks have reached your desired doneness, you can remove them from the skillet - or grill - and allow them to rest for 10 minutes before slicing 'em and serving 'em. And don't skip the resting time since this will help those delicious juices stay in the steak to make it extra tender and juicy.

Finally, you can serve your flat iron steaks with steamed veggies, baked potatoes, or any sides that you want.

    Enjoy!

How To Store Flat Iron Steak

This recipe for flat iron steak makes two steaks, so it should be just enough for your next date night or dinner for two. That said, it's super easy to double up on this recipe if you want to make it for a family dinner.

On the off chance that you end up with leftovers, you can store the cooked steak in an airtight container and it'll stay good in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.

Alternatively, if you want your steak to last even longer, you can freeze it in a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months.

How To Reheat Flat Iron Steak

When you're ready to enjoy your flat iron steak again, you can either eat it cold right out of the fridge, or you can reheat it.

I've found the best way to reheat steak without drying it out is in the oven. So, to reheat your flat iron steak, just transfer it to a baking dish with a wire rack inside so the steak cooks evenly. Then, when you've got it situated in there, you can reheat it at 300°F for about 10-15 minutes.

    Wrapping It Up

Well, that's how to make flat iron steak turn out perfect every single time.

Honestly, I know I'm a bit biased, but I really think this is one of the best steak recipes you'll find. It just has the perfect balance of spices, and it turns out so tender and juicy.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this flat iron steak as much as I/we do. As always, if you give this recipe a try, be sure to leave a comment below and let me know how it went!
