The Best Tomato Salsa
If you love Chipotle's fresh tomato salsa, then just wait until you try this copycat recipe. This homemade version combines all of those same delicious flavors that the one at Chipotle Mexican Grill has to make some absolutely drool-worthy fresh salsa.
Seriously it's just so, so good, and it works great as both a dip and as an add-in to a burrito/burrito bowl. If you love classic pico de gallo - which is hands down my wife's favorite type of salsa to put in her homemade Chipotle chicken burrito bowls along with these Chipotle fajita veggies and Chipotle black beans - you'll love this stuff.
Also, as I already mentioned, it's so easy to make this tomato salsa too! In fact, you can have it done and on the table in less than 10 minutes! All you have to do is chop up all of your veggies, mix 'em all together, give everything 'em good stir, and serve. That's really all there is to it.
Ingredients
Not to sound like a broken record, but one of the best things about this copycat Chipotle tomato salsa recipe is that it's made with just a handful of simple ingredients. In fact, I'm willing to bet you already have most - if not all - of the ingredients you'll need to make it at home already.
Anyway, here's what you'll need:
- 1 lb. tomatoes, halved, seeded, chopped
- 1 red onion, chopped
- ¼ cup fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped
- 3 jalapeno peppers
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon lime juice
- Salt, to taste
Simple stuff, right?!
Now, I always make this tomato salsa with the ingredients listed above since this recipe is as close to Chipotle's tomato salsa as it gets. But, with that said, if you prefer a spicier salsa, then you can add a couple more fresh jalapeños, a little adobo sauce, and/or a few dashes of hot sauce to the ingredient list as well.
Just be sure to go easy when adding extra spicy ingredients, as they can easily overpower the fresh tomato salsa. I'm a bit timid when it comes to spice, so I usually just make it a mild salsa, like the one at Chipotle.
By the way, you can use a few of these ingredients to make the tomatillo green salsa from Chipotle too!
How To Make Chipotle Tomato Salsa
Again, this fresh tomato salsa recipe is super easy to make. You simply just chop everything up, combine it all together, taste, and adjust any flavors as necessary. It's seriously that simple and takes just a few minutes to put together.
Anyway, let's stop wasting time and get cooking!
Step 1: Prep Work
First things first, you'll want to prepare your vegetables as I listed in the ingredients section. This means halving and chopping the tomatoes, the onion, and the fresh cilantro or parsley.
Then, after you've done that, you can cut the jalapeños in half, remove the seeds, and chop them into small pieces. By the way, I recommend wearing a pair of gloves when you're preparing the jalapeños. Doing so will ensure you don't transfer the heat of the jalapeno juices/oils to other parts of your body, such as your eyes.
Step 2: Combine The Ingredients
Now, in a medium-sized bowl, you can combine the chopped tomatoes, red onion, cilantro or parsley, jalapeños, lemon and lime juice, and salt. Then, give everything a good stir and either chill the Chipotle salsa in the fridge or serve it immediately.
Just keep in mind if you store the salsa in the fridge, you'll want to give it another good stir right before serving it. This just helps to reincorporate all of the juices together.
Step 3: Serve The Chipotle Salsa
When you're ready to serve your fresh tomato salsa, transfer the salsa from the mixing bowl to your serving bowl, then serve it with tortilla chips or add it to a burrito/burrito bowl.
Enjoy!
How To Store Chipotle Tomato Salsa
This recipe for Chipotle's tomato salsa makes 4 servings, so it's perfect as a quick appetizer or as an addition to your main course. If you're lucky, you may even end up with some leftover salsa.
Speaking of leftovers, if you do end up with some, just transfer the salsa to an airtight container and store it in the fridge. Stored this way it'll last for around 5-7 days.
Wrapping It Up
Well, that's how to make Chipotle's tomato salsa at home!
I know I'm biased, but I really think this is one of the best fresh tomato salsas out there. It just has the perfect balance of fresh flavors, and I just love how quick and easy it is to make!
