My Top Holiday Appetizer Ideas For a Party

    1. Cheese Ball Recipe

A cheese ball covered in bacon, shredded cheese, green onion, chopped nuts, and poppyseeds on a white plate next to a stack of crackers.

First up, let’s talk cheese balls! There’s something so nostalgic about this creamy, tangy appetizer, and I promise it will be the first thing to disappear off the table. This Cheese Ball Recipe combines cheddar, cream cheese, and a few choice spices to create a velvety spread that pairs perfectly with crackers or veggies.

I always prepare two—because trust me, one is never enough since adults and kids love it so much!

Why It Works: The balance of sharp and mild cheese flavors combined with the crunch of nuts on the outside gives this cheese ball an addictive quality. It's easy to make, and the reactions are always worth it.

    2. Jalapeño Poppers

Jalapeño poppers stuffed with cream cheese and topped with bacon and crushed tortilla chips, piled high on a white plate with a bowl of dipping sauce on the plate.

For those who love a little heat, these Cream Cheese Jalapeño Poppers are an absolute must. The creamy cheese filling tones down the heat from the jalapeños, while the crispy bacon adds a savory, smoky layer that makes each bite an explosion of flavor.

Why It Works: The contrast of hot and cold, creamy and crunchy, makes these poppers an irresistible appetizer. They're also super easy to prep in advance, which is a lifesaver during the chaos of holiday prep!

    3. Crab Balls Recipe

A fried crab ball cut in half next to a stack of crab balls over a bed of shredded cabbage. The crab balls are garnished with sliced green onion.

These Crab Balls might sound fancy, but they’re surprisingly simple to make! I like to serve them alongside a tangy dipping sauce like remoulade to really bring out the sweetness of the crab meat. They’re the perfect appetizer for when you want to feel a little indulgent but not break the bank.

Why It Works: The crab meat is the star of the show, but the crunchy breadcrumbs and seasonings elevate the crab without overpowering the delicate flavor of the seafood. Your guests will be asking where you got these catered from!

    4. Pigs in a Blanket

Pigs in a blanket piled on top of each other along with a bowl of spicy mayo on a white plate atop a wood board.

You can’t go wrong with Pigs in a Blanket. They are one of the best holiday party food ideas for kids, and are a huge hit time and time again.

Why It Works: They’re bite-sized, making them perfect for grabbing and serving with toothpicks for a convenient appetizer to eat. Plus, as I mentioned, they are totally kid-approved!

    5. Crockpot Buffalo Chicken Dip

Overhead view of buffalo chicken dip in a blue-rimmed bowl atop a white plate. In the corner there are bowls of potato chips and tortilla chips.

If you're looking for a dip that will keep everyone gathered around the snack table, Crockpot Buffalo Chicken Dip is your answer. With shredded chicken, cream cheese, and a generous dose of hot sauce, this dip is both creamy and spicy, with just the right amount of tang from the ranch dressing.

Why It Works: This dip is perfect for those busy party moments when you need to focus on other things but still want to serve something warm and delicious to serve. It’s easy to prepare, delicious, and addictive!

    6. Seven-Layer Dip

7 Layer dip in a black and white baking dish with a serving scooped out. There is a chip in the baking dish and more chips on the counter.

If you’ve never made a 7-Layer Dip, you’re missing out. This visually stunning dip layers refried beans, guacamole, sour cream, salsa, cheese, olives, and green onions in a way that’s as tasty as it is eye-catching.

Why It Works: The variety of textures and flavors in this dip is unmatched. Plus, it’s easy to make ahead, which is always a bonus when planning a holiday party spread.

    7. Crab-Stuffed Shrimp

A pan lined with parchment paper filled with baked shrimp stuffed with crab meat. Surrounded the shrimp are lemon wedges, fresh herbs, a bowl of cocktail sauce, and a crab claw.

I serve this Crab-Stuffed Shrimp as appetizer for my Christmas Eve party last year, and my whole family obsessed over how good it was! The juicy shrimp are stuffed with a rich, flavorful crab mixture and then baked to perfection. The result is a bite of seafood heaven that feels fancy but is so easy to prepare.

Why It Works: Stuffing shrimp with crab is a combination that always impresses. The stuffing keeps the shrimp moist, while the flavor combination of the two seafoods is a true crowd-pleaser.

    8. Bacon-Wrapped Armadillo Eggs

Armadillo eggs piled on top of each other on a fancy white plate.

If you’ve never tried Bacon-Wrapped Armadillo Eggs, you’re in for a treat. These are spicy jalapeños stuffed with sausage and cheese, wrapped in crispy bacon. The smoky, spicy flavors are a perfect balance, and every bite is an explosion of bold taste.

Why It Works: This appetizer is not only delicious, but it’s different and is something not many people have ever had, or even heard of! Trust me, it'll wow everyone who tries it.

    9. Sausage Cream Cheese Crescent Rolls

Two sausage cream cheese crescents are on a white plate. A platter with more crescents is in the background.

These Sausage Cream Cheese Crescent Rolls are perfect when you need a warm, savory bite. The sausage and cream cheese filling inside the flaky crescent roll dough makes for a snack that’s rich, hearty, and satisfying.

Why It Works: They’re easy to eat with one hand while holding a drink, which makes them a party-perfect choice. They’re also versatile—switch out the sausage for bacon or even veggies for a customized option. Oh, and these are my nieces favorite holiday appetizer, so they're a guaranteed hit with the kiddos at your party!

    10. Hot Ham & Cheese Sandwiches (Funeral Sandwiches)

Someone picking up one sandwich out of a white baking dish. The melted cheese is being stretched.

Last but certainly not least, Funeral Sandwiches are the ultimate make-ahead party food for the holidays. These sliders are filled with ham, cheese, and a tangy mustard sauce, then baked until golden and bubbly. They’re comforting, flavorful, and always a hit with a crowd.

Why It Works: They’re the kind of sandwich that everyone can enjoy, and they hold up well over time, making them ideal for parties where you need food that stays tasty throughout the event.

    • Prep Ahead: The key to holiday hosting is preparation. Many of these recipes can be made the day before, saving you time on the big day.
    • Presentation: Use platters, serving bowls, and garnishes to make your food spread look as festive as possible. I like to use red and green toothpicks for serving!
