My Take On Brenda Gantt's Biscuits
I love watching Brenda Gantt's cooking videos, and I've been in awe of her biscuit recipe ever since I first discovered her channel. It seriously makes the most delicious biscuits I've ever had!
The biscuits are golden brown and crisp on the outside yet fluffy on the inside with the perfect buttermilk flavor. The flavor is really something special, which is why I can't help but make these homemade biscuits all the time.
I could eat these biscuits all by themselves, but my favorite way to eat them is smothered in this white country gravy for the best biscuits and gravy ever! Or, serve them with this Brenda Gantt cabbage casserole for the best Brenda meal.
Why You'll Love This Recipe
4 ingredients. Yes, you read that right. You only need four ingredients to make these biscuits, and you probably have half of them on hand!
Foolproof. I love a recipe that's simple and fuss-free, and these Brenda Gantt biscuits fit the bill. Even if you've never made biscuits from scratch before, I promise you'll have no trouble making these biscuits that turn out super fluffy and full of flavor.
Family favorite. It's safe to say these biscuits have been a hit at my house lately. My wife and I make them every time we need an easy side for breakfast or dinner. We made them for our nieces, too, and they loved them, so this recipe is totally kid-approved!
Ingredients
As I just mentioned, the ingredient list for Brenda Gantt biscuits couldn't be more straightforward.
Here's everything you'll need to make them:
- 3 cups self-rising flour
- 1½ cups buttermilk
- ¼ cup Crisco shortening
- 1 teaspoon salt
If you have to run to the store for buttermilk, make sure to grab a little extra so you can make my chicken and waffles. It's another one of my favorite comfort food recipes, so you'll definitely want to try it next!
How To Make Brenda Gantt Biscuits
1. Prep work: Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Take a large cast iron pan and grease the inside surface with Crisco shortening. This will keep the bottom of the biscuits soft and light brown as they're baking.
2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, add the self-rising flour and salt. Mix to combine, then create a hole in the flour.
3. Add the wet ingredients: Pour buttermilk into the hole in the flour and add the Crisco shortening. Using your hands, squeeze the buttermilk and Crisco together to combine it with the flour mixture until you have a uniform biscuit dough.
4. Shape the biscuits: Transfer the biscuit dough from the mixing bowl to a clean, flour-dusted surface. Press the dough with the palm of your hands and gently pat out the dough to 1-inch in thickness. Use a biscuit cutter to cut out about eight biscuits.
5. Bake and serve: Place each biscuit into the greased skillet. Bake the biscuits for about 10-15 minutes until the tops turn golden brown. Serve the biscuits warm with melted butter, honey, jam, or whatever you prefer. Enjoy!
My Tips To Make The Best Recipe
- Brush the biscuits with salted butter right before baking to take the flavor up a notch.
- Feel free to bake the biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper if you don't have a cast iron skillet.
- To prevent the biscuit cutter from getting covered in stuck dough, make sure to coat it in flour in between each cut.
- If the biscuits are golden brown on top but still undercooked in the center, transfer them to a baking sheet to finish cooking.
How I Recommend Storing These Biscuits
At room temperature: You can store any leftover biscuits in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
In the fridge: For maximum freshness, wrap leftover biscuits in plastic wrap and store them in a sealed bag with the air squeezed out in the fridge for up to 1 week.
In the freezer: Allow leftover biscuits to cool completely, then wrap them individually in plastic wrap or foil and place them in a freezer-safe bag. Stored this way, you can freeze them for up to 3 months.
