This Philly cheesesteak casserole recipe is anything but basic. It combines deliciously seasoned meat with a rich cream cheese sauce and perfectly cooked pasta. Then, all of that deliciousness gets topped with melty provolone cheese. And, what's even better, is that all of this tasty tastiness takes under 30 minutes to make.
The Best Philly Cheesesteak Casserole
Philly cheesesteaks are delicious, but this casserole version might be even better than the sandwich.
I'm not kidding, this casserole is the real deal!
This Philly cheesesteak casserole recipe has all the best parts of a classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich. It's got the meat, the cheese, the onion...it's got everything! Well, everything but the bread.
Now, my favorite part about this Philly cheesesteak casserole is that everything cooks in just one pan! You basically just have to cook the ground beef, mix up the creamy sauce, pile everything into a baking dish, and then cook it in the oven.
All in all, you're looking at just about 15 minutes worth of prep, and then the casserole cooks to perfection in just 10 minutes. So, it really makes an excellent busy weeknight dinner whenever you need something that will feed the entire family!
Ingredients
So, I've already mentioned a few of the ingredients that are in this Philly cheesesteak casserole already, and you'll only need a couple more to complete the casserole. Honestly, you probably have most - if not all - of them at home already.
Anyway, here's what you'll need to make this Philly cheesesteak casserole:
- 2 cups Pasta Shells
- 3 tbsp. Butter
- 2 Garlic Cloves, minced
- ½ cup Onion, diced
- ½ lb. Ground Beef
- ½ cup Cream Cheese
- 2 cups Beef Broth
- 1 cup Cheddar Cheese, shredded
- 1 Provolone Round Cheese, cut into triangles
- Fresh Parsley to serve
See, not too bad, right?
By the way, if you have extra ground beef, you can use it to make this Sloppy Joe casserole next!
Ingredient Substitutions And Suggestions
Now, this recipe calls for ground beef since it works best in a casserole. But, of course, this is a little different than the sandwich version of the Philly cheesesteak.
So, with that said, if you want, you can substitute the ground beef with thinly sliced ribeye steak, flank steak, or any sliced steak you want for a more traditional take on a Philly cheesesteak.
As for the pasta, you can use any kind of pasta noodles that you have on hand! I think smaller noodles like shells, elbows, or macaroni work best.
Lastly, for the cheese, I like using a combination of provolone cheese and shredded cheddar cheese. But, again, feel free to use anything you want - like shredded mozzarella cheese or even pepper jack for a little spice - the casserole will turn out just as delicious if you do!
Also, as an added bonus, you can use any of the cheeses to make this Italian cheese bread to go with the casserole.
By the way, just so you know, you can give this Philly cheesesteak casserole an even more traditional feel by adding some sliced bell peppers to it as well. We like to do that from time to time when we make it.
How To Make Philly Cheesesteak Casserole
This Philly cheesesteak casserole recipe could not be easier to make. As I alluded to earlier, you basically just have to cook a few of the ingredients together in a skillet, whip up the sauce, combine everything together, and bake.
It's a super simple 4 step process that produces perfect cheesesteak casserole results every single time. And, again, all of these steps should take you no longer than 30 minutes to complete.
With that said, let's dive into how to make Philly cheesesteak casserole!
Step 1: Prep Work
Begin by preheating the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180ºC) and bringing a pot of water to boil on the stovetop. Then, once your water is boiling, cook your pasta until al dente, according to the package instructions.
The reason you'll want to cook your pasta al dente is that it will soak up a bit of moisture during the baking process, so you won't want it to overcook and become soft.
Step 2: Cook The Ingredients
Now, heat an oven-safe skillet over medium-high on the stovetop.
Once it's hot, add the butter and garlic to it and cook for a couple of minutes until the butter has melted and the garlic is fragrant.
Next, add the onion and cook it for another 5-7 minutes, or until it caramelizes and has browned.
Then, you can add the ground beef to the skillet with the garlic and onion, and cook the ground beef for a few minutes until it's browned on all sides. Also, make sure you break up the ground beef and move it around while it's cooking so it can cook evenly.
Step 3: Build The Casserole
Now it's time to make the rich cream cheese sauce.
To make the sauce, add the cream cheese and beef broth to the skillet with the rest of the ground beef mixture in it, and stir everything together until it is well-mixed and the cream cheese has thinned out. Then, after that's taken care of, the pasta should be cooked so you'll want to add the al dente pasta to your sauce and meat.
Finally, continue mixing until everything is combined.
Step 4: Top And Bake
So, now that the casserole is pretty much complete, you can either leave it in the oven-safe skillet or transfer it to a casserole dish.
Either way, top the casserole with some sliced provolone cheese and shredded cheddar cheese and bake for a few minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Finally, serve warm with fresh parsley on top, and enjoy!
How To Store Philly Cheesesteak Casserole
This recipe for Philly cheesesteak casserole will make about 6 servings, so there should be plenty for the whole family! But, if you think you'll need more, you can easily double or triple this recipe.
Also, this may seem obvious, but casseroles really do make the best leftovers. So, don't be afraid to make some extra. Honestly, this Philly cheesesteak casserole might even be better the next day/s after you make it.
Now, if you do happen to have leftovers storing them is a breeze. So, to store 'em, just cover your casserole dish tightly with plastic wrap or transfer the leftover casserole to an airtight container and store it in the fridge. Stored this way the casserole will last in the fridge for about 4 days.
By the way, if you want to keep your leftovers for even longer you can store them in the freezer. Just transfer the casserole to an airtight container and keep it in the freezer for up to 6 months.
How To Reheat Philly Cheesesteak Casserole
When it comes to reheating your Philly cheesesteak casserole, you have a couple of options. My favorite method is to put the casserole back in the oven at 350°F and bake for 10-15 minutes.
For a quicker method, you can microwave it in 20-second increments mixing between each one until warmed.
If you're reheating the frozen casserole, I recommend letting it thaw overnight in the fridge, and then reheat as suggested above.
Wrapping It Up
Well, that is how to make a Philly cheesesteak casserole!
