Why You'll Love This Viral Scooby Doo Sandwich
I grew up watching Scooby-Doo and loved the whole gang, but some of the scenes I remember most are Shaggy and Scooby making those ridiculously tall sandwiches. Every time they made one, I wanted to know what it would actually taste like. I just never thought you could build a sandwich that big and have it actually work.
Then I saw @theredbowlofficial recreate the famous Scooby Doo sandwich in a viral TikTok, and I knew I had to finally make my own version.
I ended up going with a full deli-style sandwich loaded with ham, turkey, salami, pepperoni, crispy bacon, fried eggs, Swiss, cheddar, and plenty of fresh toppings. The chipotle mayo adds a little heat and ties all those different fillings together, then the toasted bread gives the sandwich enough structure to actually stand up.
It’s definitely over-the-top, but that’s exactly what a Scooby Doo sandwich should be. And the best part is that underneath all the nostalgia and ridiculous layers, it’s actually a really good sandwich.

Ingredient Notes That Make This Viral Scooby Sandwich Better
- Bread: Use a sturdy round Italian loaf or boule that can support all the layers without collapsing. A softer sandwich loaf won’t hold up nearly as well once everything is stacked.
- Deli meats: I use a mix of ham, turkey, salami, and pepperoni so every layer tastes a little different. You don’t need those exact meats, though. Roast beef, mortadella, or another favorite deli meat can easily be swapped in.
- Cheese: Swiss and cheddar give you a mix of mild, nutty, and sharper cheese flavor. Provolone, pepper Jack, or American cheese would all work if you want to change it up.
- Bacon: Cook the bacon until it's super crispy. Softer bacon can get lost between all the other fillings, while crispy bacon adds a noticeable crunch.
- Eggs: Sunny-side-up or over-easy eggs give the sandwich the most dramatic result when you cut into it. If you’d rather avoid a runny yolk, cook them over-medium or over-hard.
- Chipotle mayo: The smoky heat helps cut through all the meat and cheese. Regular mayo works if you want it milder, or mix mayo with a little hot sauce for an easy substitute.
How to Make a Scooby Doo Sandwich
Step 1: Toast the Bread
Cut the round loaf horizontally into 3 even layers. Brush the cut sides lightly with olive oil, then toast them in a skillet or in a 400°F oven until lightly golden.

Step 2: Prep the Toppings
Slice the tomatoes and season them with a little olive oil, salt, and black pepper. Thinly slice the red onion, separate the lettuce leaves, and have the pickles and pepperoncini ready.

Step 3: Fry the Eggs
Cook the eggs sunny-side up or over easy, depending on how runny you want the yolks. Set them aside while you build the sandwich.
Step 4: Build the Bottom Layer
Place the bottom piece of bread on a large cutting board or platter and spread it with chipotle mayo. Add lettuce, tomato, red onion, ham, turkey, crispy bacon, cheddar, and Swiss.

Step 5: Add the Middle Layer
Set the middle piece of bread on top and press down gently to help stabilize the sandwich. Spread it with more chipotle mayo, then add lettuce, pepperoncini, pickles, turkey, salami, pepperoni, cheddar, and Swiss.

Step 6: Add the Eggs and Top
Place the fried eggs over the second layer, then add the top piece of toasted bread. Press down carefully so the sandwich holds together without crushing the fillings.

Step 7: Secure and Serve
Push 2-4 long sandwich skewers through the loaf to keep everything in place, then top the skewers with green olives. Use a large serrated knife to cut the sandwich into wedges and serve right away.

My Tips For The Best Scooby Doo Sandwich
- Use sturdy bread. A dense round Italian loaf, crusty sourdough, or boule is important here. Softer bread can compress under the weight of all the meat, cheese, bacon, and eggs.
- Toast every cut side. Toasting the inside surfaces gives the sandwich more structure and helps keep the bread from getting soggy once the tomatoes, mayo, and eggs are added.
- Build the heaviest ingredients toward the bottom. Put denser meats and cheeses on the lower layers and save lighter toppings for higher up. It makes the sandwich more stable and easier to slice.
- Keep the wet ingredients under control. Pat the pickles and pepperoncini dry, and don’t overload the sandwich with tomato juice or mayo. Too much moisture makes a sandwich this tall much harder to hold together.
- Use long skewers before slicing. Push the skewers all the way through the sandwich before you cut it. They keep the layers aligned and stop everything from sliding out as soon as the knife goes through.
- Use a serrated knife. A large bread knife lets you saw through the loaf without crushing all the layers underneath it.
- Serve it soon after assembling. The contrast between the toasted bread, crisp bacon, fresh toppings, and warm eggs is best right away. If it sits too long, the bread starts absorbing moisture from the fillings.

Scooby Doo Sandwich FAQs
What is a Scooby Doo sandwich?
A Scooby Doo sandwich is an oversized, stacked sandwich inspired by the giant sandwiches Scooby and Shaggy were always making in the cartoons. There isn’t one official combination of fillings, so this recipe is my deli-style version with multiple meats, cheeses, bacon, eggs, vegetables, and chipotle mayo.
Is a Scooby Doo sandwich the same as a Dagwood sandwich?
It’s essentially the same style. A Dagwood sandwich is a tall, multilayered sandwich piled with different meats, cheeses, vegetables, and condiments. The name originally comes from Dagwood Bumstead from the Blondie comic strip, but the giant sandwiches Scooby and Shaggy eat are often described as Dagwood-style sandwiches.
What kind of sandwich did Scooby and Shaggy eat?
There wasn’t just one. Scooby and Shaggy ate all kinds of exaggerated sandwiches throughout the series, including towering deli-style sandwiches and some intentionally bizarre combinations. This recipe recreates the huge stacked sandwich most people picture when they think of Scooby and Shaggy eating together.
How do you keep a giant sandwich from falling apart?
Start with sturdy toasted bread, avoid using too much mayo or other wet ingredients, and place heavier meats and cheeses toward the bottom. Most importantly, push several long sandwich skewers through the entire loaf before slicing it.
What bread is best for a Scooby Doo sandwich?
A large round Italian loaf or boule works best because it’s sturdy enough to support all the layers. Avoid very soft bread, which can compress or tear once the meat, cheese, eggs, and toppings are stacked on top.
Can I make a Scooby Doo sandwich ahead of time?
I wouldn’t fully assemble it too far ahead. The tomatoes, pickles, mayo, and eggs will eventually soften the toasted bread. You can prep the meats, cheeses, vegetables, and cooked bacon ahead, then toast the bread and assemble the sandwich shortly before serving.
Can I leave out the fried eggs?
Absolutely. The eggs make this version even more over-the-top, but they aren’t required. Leave them out or replace them with another layer of deli meat or cheese if you want a sandwich that’s easier to make ahead and serve.
What should I serve with a Scooby Doo sandwich?
Since the sandwich itself is huge, simple sides work best. Potato chips, fries, pickles, coleslaw, or a basic salad are all good options. For a Scooby-Doo-themed party, I’d cut the sandwich into wedges and serve it as the centerpiece.
